We spent a great afternoon in the museum starting on the upper floors and moving from pre history, through to the Medieval period and right up to the present day. The staff on site were welcoming, knowledgable and generous with their time. We heard lots of stories of mythical figures in Ireland that brought displays alive, and wonderful stories about powerful female figures that played prominent roles in Irish Mythology. The museum is right in the centre of Dundalk and easy to walk to. A great way to spend an afternoon! Good access for those with a disability too we noticed.

I would highly recommend a visit to Dundalk Museum to locals and visitors alike. The downstairs floor gives a strong presentation of equipment that would have been in use in the industries that thrived in the town over the last 200 years, all in pristine condition. The curator, Brian Walsh, very kindly provided a mini-info session on the Trench Art on the second floor. Our out of towners, from Vietnam, were very moved to see the reference to the Vietnam War on the wall which puts Dundalk's history in a global context. This museum is a real asset to the town; very well done to all who run it so well and who care about the artefacts with such pride.

We really enjoyed our visit here. The museum is split over 3 floors in the old fire house. There is a lift, so fully accessible. Kids enjoyed it also with lots to look at. Recommend calling in if in the area

I've been meaning to share this for weeks, but time has flown...
We stopped into the museum for a flying visit on a long journey from Belfast to Galway. To be honest it was mainly a break for the kids, a bathroom break, a look at the bubble car, a quick walk around, and yet we were greeted so warmly by the lady on reception, who was so kind with the children and generous with her attention. I wish I knew her name, she deserves a raise. What could have been a one off flying visit has become a lasting happy memory for them, and they want to go back and take a proper look at all the varied and wonderful artifacts crammed into this place, and so despite living in Belfast we will find the time to do just that!

Decided today when we were about town to pop in to the county museum. As a blow-in to Dundalk I was looking forward to seeing the exhibits with my girlfriend who is from the town. Oh boy what a mistake that was! Checked both Google and Louth county council websites because of COVID and thought “sorted!, something to kill an hour in the rain!”

We headed in the door to be greeted frostily by Ms Attitude. Without so much as a hello or other pleasantries, we were rudely informed that last admissions were 3PM. Believing that the museum would be open until 5PM as advertised online, we would have had no problem with a short visit.

Instead we were told “It’s written on the door” in a harsh and frosty tone. The sign on the door did indeed indicate that the museum had restricted hours during COVID. It was a simple black and white piece of paper that was placed at a kid’s eye level lest it might be readable!

Instead of the staff member courteously explaining the situation, we were treated to rudeness surpassing Fawlty Towers. Is this level of customer service the best our public services have to offer? We walked out very upset after being admonished for simply walking in the door. As someone who has been to the museum many times, my girlfriend says that this isn’t the usual treatment visitors receive there. Thank goodness we didn’t travel far.

We spent the last few days travelling all over the country. We were just trying to enjoy a simple day in town. Everywhere else we were treated warmly and professionally. Like everyone, we’re trying to make the best of the summer staycations encouraged during COVID. Is it too much to ask that the county council could update its website in this day and age? And perhaps inform its staff that politeness costs nothing

I have passed this place countless times but never went in. After deciding to visit I was surprised at how much is here, both for adults and for kids. The staff were very friendly and advised us to take the elevator to Floor 3 (the fourth floor for those who count from the ground floor) and work our way down,
The current exhibition on the top floor is of a famous son of Dundalk, Peter Rice, an engineer who has been involved in the building of many iconic structures across the globe, including the Sydney Opera House.
The next floor explains a lot of pre-history from Louth, with much of the information being completely new to me. In particular, it's a bit disappointing to realise the destruction of ancienf monuments that happened in the 1800's, for which wie only have drawings from the mid-1700's.
THe next floor has more recent history, including Cromwellian artefacts and the history of that period in Louth.
The ground floor has 20th century exhibits from the region.
This is a really thorough historical overview of Louth. It even has a Heinkel Bubble Car - I never realised that the GNR factory in Dundalk acquired the rights to this car from the original German factory.

All in all, a fascinating place, well worth the visit.

It was a surprise to call in this museum and find 4 floors of interesting and informative exhibits and displays.

The Peter Rice exhibition on the top floor was an excellent overview of this amazing mans achievements.

The remaining floors provided a well documented timeline of the County's and Ireland's history through artifacts, documents and display boards.

Children would probably need "help" in appreciating what they were seeing as there were no interactive displays

Disappointing though was the indifferent reception we received.
We are overseas visitors, and perhaps unfortunately, had just returned from touring London's Museums where there always a warm and enthusiastic welcome

Also couldn't understand why photographs were not allowed of any of the exhibits etc.
Documents i can understand, but the bubble car?

We visited here specially to see the hundredth anniversary exhibition on the sinking of the SS Dundalk in the First World War.

The upper floor holds a large exhibition on Irish prehistory, including a number of interactive displays.

The middle floor is devoted to the last 400 years up to the present day and the anniversary exhibit.

On the ground floor there is a considerable collection of artefacts relating to local businesses and industry.

A film show on the locality was “out of order” on the day of our visit. The staff at the reception were very friendly and welcoming. The admission price of 2 Euro for adults was also welcome.

Altogether we spent just over an hour. We also took the opportunity to visit Kelly’s monument, which was just along the street.

I would recommend this museum - there is plenty on offer regardless of which period of Irish history you are interested in.

Pay parking is available in the Main Street adjacent to the Museum.
