I have plans to stay in Princeville in mid-April. As an intermediate surfer, can we expect decent surf conditions on north shore Kauai during that time? I know winter has huge swells and summers can go flat, but I’m hoping there are still good rideable waves in springtime (and minimal wind). Would appreciate any feedback from experienced surfers who have gone during April. Thank you!

Hi! We've rented unit 114 at Pali Ke Kua in January for a week. I'm reading about the muddy trail with ropes down to the beach but I was under the impression that there is a concrete trail from the condos to Hideaway Beach. Is that so? Did you find it difficult to maneuver? We are active folks just turned 70 years old but want to be careful.
Thanks! Hope to hear back from you soon.

There was no concrete trail when my husband and I were there in July 2018. The trail we took was the only trail by the Pali Ke Kua condos, that started on the right side of the tennis courts. It starts off as a very skinny dirt trail and opens up to the cliffs. There are about six or so concrete steps leading down at a steep-ish angle and corroded metal railings, which may be the concrete trail they are talking about, but that ends pretty quickly to dirt and root steps and rope. I've seen older people around your age (I believe) traverse it just fine. I would just wear good hiking shoes and be very careful if it has just rained because it will be muddy and slippery.
There is another trail to the beach from the next development over, but it leads you to an adjacent beach to the right of Hideaways that is not as beautiful. Most of the shoreline is rocky and the water has rocky protrusions as well. But when the tide is low you can walk around the outcropping to get to Hideaways. The issue here is you have to make sure you go back before the tide rises otherwise you're stuck going up the steep dirt trail to leave. Though honestly going up is a lot easier than going down and the first time was the hardest. We went multiple times and it got easier and easier.
We also checked out the beach by St. Regis but it was terrible for snorkeling and Hideaways was by far the clear winner in the area.

AK24Mio did a great job of describing how to get there. The path down the cliff which can be rather slippery if it has rained a whole lot. After finding the beach, do be careful about entering the nearby stream after a big rainstorm even a few days before. Our son waded thru that water and contracted Leptospirosis which can be fatal if not caught in time. The feral pigs in the moutains are carriers of the disease and if one has a scratch, cut or gets the infected water in their eyes one can become very ill. We visited the beach after a 3 day rainstorm and our son waded thru the water showed symptoms after we returned to the mainland a couple of days later. Luckily, I called Kauai's Department of Health and asked them if there was any kind of disease going around. They asked if he had been in the stream (ocean water is fine) and when I said yes they said to get him to an infectuous disease specialist immediately as Lepto can be fatal or one can lose arms, legs and can die if not treated promptly. We were very lucky as we caught it just in time and he made a full recovery!

I am curious if you hiked down after the recent storms? And if so how were the water conditions re: brown water adivsory?

we went 2 days before storm, but still plenty of rain and High Tide warnings, so the water was not real friendly and nice, so we chose to look at rather than possibly get swept away in it.

We are booked to travel to Princeville on May 5. With the current weather situation and flooding in Hanalei, I’m concerned about accessibility to this area. Can anyone tell me how the Princeville area in general is doing after the severe flooding?

Princeville was not damaged as it is on a high plateau overlooking the ocean and a planned community with grading that channels rain water run off. Hanalei had flooding but most of Hanalei town is back up and running and the stores and restaurants will welcome you. The beaches are beautiful and all cleaned up. The event was weekend of April 14 and one thing about the North Shore, they didn’t sigh and cry and wait for federal help. The people of the community worked to clean and remove wreckage and provide food and water and supplies. And rebuild. Bam!
Non residents are not being given access to areas past Hanalei because the highway is damaged and the Wainiha/Haena community are rebuilding. Sorry.

We are already booked for a couple activities, but what can you simply drive up to and enjoy, what beaches are available for public use during the week.

Hideaways was an awesome experience - very cool secluded beach. The walk down is a little steep but very doable and there is a rope that you can hold on to for support. For parking, I'd recommend parking at the St. Regis valet which is free. Just say that you're visiting the hotel or better head their for lunch before walking to hideaway beach - it's a great way to also enjoy the incredible beauty of the St. Regis.
In my opinion, the beach at Hanalei bay is stunning. It's a darker sand and the water is crystal clear.

Hello and thank you in advance for your responses.
How is Hideaway Beach in December? Specifically mid December...
Is the water rough? Cold?
Is it typically quite cloudy and overcast?
Thank you again!

Waves can get bigger in winter but still safe to swim and snorkel. Water temp is still ok
As far as clouds, all depends on weather. The north shore gets its fair share of rain but than a half hour later it's a rainbow and sunny. Best time to enjoy that beach is in afternoon as the sun is blocked by trees and mountains. Beautiful sunsets from beach.
Best place to stay is the condos above beach called PUU POA we stayed in 412 that is the best unit in complex. Good luck hope I was helpful. Happy Holidays
