Wow! Going to El Malpais NM was one of the highlights of our trip. First, stopping by the visitor center then traveling on to one of the overlooks, perched high above the valley. A bit windy, so watch your footing.....a long drop down. They have vault toilets close by the parking area which were clean and maintained. The views were incredible.

Visited for 2-3 hours while spending the night in Grants on a roadtrip. The natural stone arch (Ventana) and the Sandstone Blufts at sunset are worth visiting. Unfortunately, the visitor center was closed due to a “sewer isssue”. We watched the park film on our iPad.

Arrived at the Visitors' Center just in time to observe the solar eclipse. There were employees at the gate handing out free viewing glasses. Nice views of the ancient lava flows as you drive down the east side of the monument. Be sure to stop at the Sandstone Bluffs overlook, which provides a nice view of the lava flow and surrounding area.

We had stopped at the Visitors center for El Morror and they gave us information there as the one for here was temporarily closed. Sandstone Bluffs are 9 1/2 miles down from turning in. To me this is a MUST stop. 1 1/2 mile drive up. There’s lots to see & explore. Just be careful. Many went to the right where it’s narrower, but I found the center and left just so much better. It was hard on these old knees so I went up in different area’s opposite to trying to walk it all the way lol it’s also not safe in spots. The views though .. amazing!! The right takes you to a world of it’s own. Just so cool to walk around and see life on top. It’s about 10 more miles to La Ventana Arch .. stop and take the short walk to see up closer. You can see it from the parking lot too. It’s only 300-400 feet to reach the end. It’s worth it to see it close up. Then the Narrows are just after that….Just stunning to drive along. We turned around at the picnic areas as it was getting late and sun was going down. The Lava rocks are farther down. I’ve walked on Lava before… but have read it’s great. Just a beautiful drive through as well. A great stop for sure !!

It was really June of 2022, that my son & I visited El Malpais National Monument, it was pretty cool, unlike a volcano the lava right up from the ground and pouring all over the place.

Very good day trip at El Malpais. Begin at highway 117 off of the 40. You can begin by traveling a short distance to the Sandstone Bluffs parking area. Amazing views of the valley and mountains. There are some interpretive signs, but it's best to poke around a bit and access the bluffs. Those of you who are more inquisitive will find a wooden stair step which will assist your access to bluff tip viewpoints. Also, you can picnic here and maybe bushwack a little. Moving down the road going south you'll pass the Acoma-Zuni trailhead . It's about 7.5 miles one way to the highway 53 connection, so if you decide to hike here this will pretty much be the end of your day trip. Otherwise stop to see La Ventana, a magnificent natural sandstone arch. Then move on to the South Narrows picnic area. At the beginning of the gravel road into the site, you'll discover a trail up onto the ridge you were admiring on your drive to here. The visitor center ranger encouraged me to try it out. It goes about 4-5 Miles one way with amazing views of the entire ecosystem. But you really only have to hike half that distance to take in some stupendous views. Note that this trail is rocky. And so is the next to Lava Falls. Not really a trail, but more of a scamper over the lava flow following the placement of highly visible cairns. Start at the marked trailhead and, if successful in this endeavor, return to the left of the parking. Bring mid-calves, a pole and 32 ounces of liquid. Just continue to follow the markers. The loop will be to your left as you walk atop the flow. It might seem that you'll never return, but the cairns will lead you back to the parking. Midway there's a wooden marker pointing to the bowl. Definitely go this way and walk on the crater. Retrace your steps and follow the cairns to the parking. The next one is always visible from the one you're standing near. Just keep looking, sometimes 360°. Once you've completed this journey you should be mightily tired. Finish your liquid drink, return to Grants, Gallup, or Acoma and enjoy the rest of the day.

This is a beautiful park! It is essentially an enormous lava field with a few highly accessible things to do around the edges--which was nice because we only had a couple of hours. And it's free! We came in from El Morro so we first stopped at the El Calderon Trailhead and hiked out on the trail into the lava field. While you pretty much have access across the entire park to lava flows, this trail is easy and we saw a number of lava caves/tubes. (We were not interested in going inside them, although I think you may do so with a permit.) We then stopped at the visitor center...an absolutely awesome new visitor center...and then drove down the east side of the park on 117, stopping at various points along the way. I recommend, (1) stopping at the Sandstone Bluffs Overlook (amazing) and walking along the precipice (don't fall), and (2) hiking to La Ventana Natural Arch (WOW!). Both locations are well marked, have plenty of parking, and require only a little walking. Finally, be sure to continue driving down 117 through "the narrows" to the Narrows Picnic Area before turning around. The views along this little scenic drive are spectacular! Finally, we visited on a cloudy/rainy day...which was nice because there is no shade in this park.

I stopped here while traveling around New Mexico after seeing the signs along I-40. The visitor center is conveniently located near the interstate while the rest of the Monument is located further away with hiking trails and a few caves.

Drove up from Albuquerque, looking for another stamp for our National Parks Passport. Stopped first at the visitors Center & then drove on down. Very windy, cold day so we didn't stay long, but great views. Enjoyed the peacefulness.
