It's a beautiful area and it does wonderful work rehabilitating injured and sick Howler monkeys and releasing them back to the wild.

Vicky and her volunteers are doing a beautiful job caring for Howler Monkeys, and other animals, that would otherwise surely die. The best part is that the sanctuary has a focus on getting these amazing creatures living independently in the wild, again. It is a selfless and loving act that is desperately needed in an area where development and negative human impact are putting beautiful creatures are risk. Vicky is witty and loving in her educational talks, and inspired my children (10, 12) to learn more about how to work as conservationists in our daily lives to reduce our negative impact on nature. This is not a petting zoo and the staff are very serious about not taking pictures of any animal with a human - due to the propagation of the pet trade. If your goal is a selfie, this isn't the tour for you.

Vicki and her team are an inspiration. The care and rehabilitation of the animals is incredible. Her tour, generous sharing, video, and explanations were the best. We learned so much about Howler Monkeys and other wildlife in Costa Rica from this tour.

Although it is quite pricey, it was worth every penny. Vicky was a lovely host throughout the whole visit and we still cannot believe she have that much energy at her age. Her installations are modest and the work she do is quite remarkable. I won't say more since I want to let people enjoy their visit...

We loved loved our tour of SIBU! Vicky (the owner) and Deb (volunteer) gave us such a cool tour. We learned about how Vicky and her husband bought the land with their own funds (about 25 years ago) and have since poured all of their time and money into making it a sanctuary for orphaned animals. It is run solely now on donations and they could really use your help! (See thier website)
During the tour we, got to see thier garden (they are working on being self sustained) house and habitats for the animals. While we were there, Howler Monkeys were in the trees, right above our heads!! We heard about how Vicky and her husband are working with the power company on getting all of the local "hot" power lines insulated (the number one cause of death for monkeys in Nosara is hot power lines).
The tour was very tender and heartfelt. You could see the dedication and love that Vicky and Deb have for thier work and the animals. I came away wishing I could do more... And I can, by donating to SIBU!!

We've been visiting Costa Rica for years and finally found this place. Met up with a few other people for the two hour visit. Every thing was delightful-the sanctuary, the manager, the staff, the cool fruit punch, but most of all the monkeys. Well, and the small wild pig, the raccoons and the coatimundi. Well worth the donation amount and then some.

We were greeted by Steve when we arrived with a HUG!!! That's my favorite way to be greeted!
Vicki and Steve are seriously 2 of the warmest people I have ever met. We were shown around their property where they rehab injured and orphaned animals. They really do amazing work! We got to see baby howler monkeys and some of the regulars that roam the property, like Noel the one armed howler monkey who came to visit us while we were eating some DELICIOUS bananas at the end of our tour.
We visited their green house and got to taste some of what they were growing.
Steve was so knowledgeable and told us so many interesting facts about the flora and fauna in the area.
This was a highlight of our trip!
Definitely do this if you are in the area!

If you love animals and you want to see what an amazing place two dedicated people have built up from scratch (!), then SIBU is the place to visit.
On the tour (be aware: only available twice a week) you learn about the fascinating history of the place while walking through it and taking in the rich plant and animal live.
Our personal highlights were the three baby racoons and witnessing the arrival of a new baby monkey in need of the love and shelter provided at SIBU.

What an amazing place- all the hard work shows the second you step foot into the SIBU Wildlife Sanctuary in Nosara. Tears filled my eyes, seeing the passion behind all the hard work. Vicki & Steve are beyond friendly & welcoming, & have so much knowledge to share.
I recommend EVERYONE takes the time to experience such a magical place.
Thank you, for all your extremely hard work.

What days can we visit? I saw that visiting/tour is allowed twice a week. Is there a van service to use for transportation?

You can take a tuk tuk from your lodge to get there. The drivers are local and know their way around. Very inexpensive. They are parked at most intersections or your hotel can call one. You need to email Sibu to make a reservation. Vicky or her staff answere within 24 hours.

We'd like to come visit, what are your hours? Do you accept day volunteers, or does it need to be a longer engagement.

It is a wonderful place to visit (and the daily fee is well justified) but I cannot imagine that they would take a day volunteer. The visitor fees help support their great work and I expect it would take much more than a day to train a volunteer.

I will be staying at the Riu Palace resort in Guanacaste ..
If I make arrangements to visit the sanctuary, will I be able to hire a driver to get me there? .....How long is the drive?
Is there a tour company that arranges a trip to the Sanctuary from my hotel?

Based on a google search you are a good couple of hours drive away from Nosara which is your closest community.
I would suggest contacting your hotel to discuss logistics. Roads and driving conditions are not good in many areas of CR so you will need to know what you are getting into when you book your tour. Still all in all the drive and the visit to SIBU would be worth it for me. I'd even suggest considering getting good directions and renting a car yourself. ( for the more adventurous types).

We are planning a trip to Play Hermosa next febuary and i was wondering what the cost of this visit was and how far from playa Hermosa by car. Also was wondering how long the visit lasts?.

I'm not sure how much it costs since it was part of our whole resort package. Sorry. I think the whole visit was perhaps 3 hours. I got the feeling it was somewhat flexible though. You have to prearrange your visit and show up on time to the front gate, which is kept locked. Then when everyone is gathered Steve took us for a short hike and told us about the plants and the background of how they got started in this venture and how they acquired the land. Then we all loaded into a truck and went up the small mountain to the top where the house and the enclosed animal habitats: hospital/ rehabilitation/ nursery are located. We met Miss Vicki there and had lemonade and bananas (complimentary) then watched a short video and heard more about the challenges they face. Then we got to visit the monkeys and pizotes in the habitat. They are very careful not to treat the animals as pets since the goal is to release them into the wild. At the end some of us made donations or bought the book, Tshirt, or calendar that they have available to raise funds but they don't push this. I hope that helps.
