We visted China to stay with my daughter who lives and works as a teacher in Shanghai. Whilst ovr there we booked a two night stay in Beijing to visit a few of the major attractions there. We chose a hotel that was fairly close to the Great Wall at Badaling but it was really pure guesswork. It turned out to be a big mistake! If you do not speak Chinese then this hotel is not for you. The reception desk service was appalling - no smiles, no interest, no help. The hotel is situated in a rather less than salubrious part of the city and proved very difficuly to get a taxi. In fact, we were scheduled to leave the hotel at about 4am so we asked the people on the reception desk if they could arrange a taxi for us, either to be booked now for later or to ring for one in the early morning (we kind of managed to communicate with them in Chinese thanks to a few educating text messages from my daughter in Shanghai who speaks the language pretty fluently). The hotel staff told us that they could not or would not telephone for a taxi for us or arrange for one to be sent to the hotel for us to retutn to the Airport !!! The upshot was that we left the hotel at 9pm to attempt to get a taxi ourselves off the street (which we eventaully managed to do after some considerable difficulty as most cabs would not entertain a trip to the airport). So instead of our second night in the hotel that we had booked, we spent the night trying to sleep on an airport terminal bench! All this aside, the trip over has left us with some wonderful memories of the fabulous sights in Beijing; I just wish we'd been a little more judicious when booking the package on the internet. It's the Beijing Holiday Inn for us next time!…
