It was a very clean well kept room with A/C and ceiling fan. Ensuite shower room and toilet. My only problem was that I booked my accommodation on the day of my stay after realising that I was going to miss my boat to redang. I got a taxi to the homestay believing it to be a hotel until I arrived. I exit the cab in a dark suburban residence with no sign of a hotel. I ask a local where is the homestay and he points at the sign and then a car drives past which he flags down. It was the manager of the homestay. He drives me a few blocks whilst asking some questions. .. when did you book? "Today" and why didnt you call? ... anyway, he says its no hassle as a family from belgium just moved out and so they would clean the sheets and room. We arrive at a quaint bungalow where a mother...plump warm lady with an infectious smile welcomes me and offers food and a drink whilst her daughter cleans my room for the night. Her son comes out as well and asks me what time I need the ferry in the morning so he can drive me there. I wake up to a choice of different local delights for breakfast. Then I jump in the car with the son and he drives me to the ferry where we arrive early and so he takes me to the local street market to walk around. He even negotiated for some sunglasses for me. This experience really opened up my mind to homestays, I would do it again in a heartbeat …
We stayed in this home stay (that consists of more houses) last night. We went to a wedding and to the mosque. If you want to know something more about the life of the people living in Malaysia and there religion and the food, this is the place. Not all people will like this. You need to find out if this is something for you.
I was there for an academic research with an Associate Professor, and they were most welcoming to our questions about their home culture. The airport was in close vicinity of the homestay, and a drive out to the city took maybe 5-10 minutes or so. Just outside the housing area outside the homestay is the beach--lined up with shack restaurants that serve fresh supplies from the sea. Teluk Ketapang Homestay is perfect for those who wish to immerse themselves in the culture and learn more about Terengganu. There will be guidance every step of the way, and the hosts will show you around, just make a request and they will suggest activities for you. Our room was air-conditioned (yes!) and spacious, they provided towels and kept the bathroom clean, so the stay was very comfortable throughout. The hosts and villagers are open to tourists and are happy to assist and answer questions, making it a very pleasant social experience for us.…
