This may look serene, but if you want to assaulted with noise pollution, this is the place! They have super noisy caged birds that scream out all times of the day, and they can't stop with the motors. They sculpt the grounds with mowers, weed trimmers, and more for several hours a day for several days a week. They even are so "in harmony" with nature that they are filling in part of the precious wetlands on the property. Let's not forget that the two lane street right next to it has its own noise pollution. If they got rid of the birds, preserved the wetlands instead of destroying it, and kept landscaping to one day a week, it would be a winner. As it is... its a place to lose you last nerve trying to relax.
We had a fantastic stay at Hale Lamalama Ka'ili. Amber and Trevor were extremely warm and welcoming really going beyond what we expected. By the time we left, we felt like they were family. We had never stayed at a B&B with our twin boys and they absolutely loved the experience. They still cite it as one of their top experiences on the vacation. There were so many things for them to see and do right on the property itself. There were fish and birds at the lovely pond, big parrots roosting in a cage out back, geckos scooting around outside (as they are everywhere on the island), and they even have a couple of very cute little dogs (which Amber and Trevor keep to themselves unless they see that you are comfortable with having them around). There are fruit trees, pineapples, and other things growing in their gardens. They had a foosball table and ping pong to use and even offered to let us borrow some beach gear. We stayed for two nights in the room with two double beds. It was plenty spacious and comfortable for us though the beds might be a little tighter for four full adults. It's on the upper floor so involves a couple flights of stairs but Trevor graciously helped with the luggage. There is a nice master bath off the suite and they offered use of the Jacuzzi tub on the main floor if we wanted it. There was a good breeze and ceiling fans so there was no need for AC. The property borders a road but it doesn't see many cars in the overnight hours and you can close the windows on that side worst case. They offered us free use of the main floor - kitchen, living room, and lanai - so it was almost as if you had a condo. Everything was very nicely kept and the lanai in particular was just awesome overlooking the pond and back gardens. For us the location was very convenient - just outside Hilo downtown, close the airport, close to Banyan Drive and Liliuokalani Gardens, not far from shopping, and with several beach parks just down the road. Amber also said that side of Hilo tends to see a few less showers which seemed to be true from what we saw. We did have a couple showers but it just made the green pop that much more when the sun came out. The breakfasts were lovely out on the lanai. They cooked some hot breakfast items but also had an extensive set of local fruits (the bananas and papayas were from the trees on the property), yogurts, breads/bagels, and juices. They were very keen to honor any dietary needs and actually went exploring at the farmers market to find some special things for us. The kids still rave about the breakfasts!…
