This youth hostel has a nice setting by the lake. It feels close to nature, and I'd heard it was once a derelict building on public land that had been restored. It's still very ramshackle and chock full of nature-related clutter. It's isolated so you really need your own transport to get here. Food is sometimes provided, but when I was there, the advertised restaurant and cafe did not open in the evening, so come well prepared. The communal toilets absolutely stink and need to be properly cleaned. The rooms were clean and of a good size, but the beds were really uncomfortable, and my partner preferred sleeping on the floor. Breakfast (and indeed much else) was below average, compared to other places I've stayed in Hokkaido for a similar amount of money. The owner was pleasant enough, but his assistant outshone him. The place desperately needs a woman's touch.

Hana Kotori hostel – comfortable stay with very helpful staff (gave me a lift to and from the railway station). He evening dinner was great value and a great sight – 14 different dishes. and all of local provenance I was told. The hostel has been renovated with a lot of reclaimed materials so has a rustic and not new) feel about it. The area is very quiet – not much too do except bird watching and enjoy the peace and quiet!
