I was soloing as part of a guided tour group, we were about 7-8 people in total.
Both Ken and Shin were amazing guides and I had a wonderful experience!
We went around Ryogoku and learnt about what it’s like to be a Sumo wrestler and their way of life, as well as their important role in Japanese culture.
Shin being a Sumo wrestler himself adds to the authenticity of this toured guide.
We also went to Ekōin Temple and had a look inside the actual temple and its surroundings.
We even had a proper match with a professional Sumo trainer that came to fight and show us what they can do.
Highly recommended!

This was a balanced short lesson including both the physical and spiritual aspects of Sumo with a large dash of fun.

The guide, Ken, was full of energy and his intentions are good. However, we felt that we were misled with the experience. We believed we were going to see sumos training, see where they live and learn more about them directly. We did see a former professional sumo. It felt somewhat gimmicky as he started rapping in the street and it was so noisy that police were actually called by neighbours.
We did learn about sumo culture and Buddhist culture, Ken was honest and when questions were asked that he didn’t know answers to, he didn’t make anything up. Though Ken’s intentions are good, he was a bit too loud and animated for a tour that was this public. It almost seemed the opposite of Japanese culture.
All in all, we would have appreciated if Ken set our expectations before we paid him to take us from the lobby of the Sumo arena (we didn’t even see the actual arena) to an outdoor public Sumo ring to a Buddhist temple. Bottom line is that we thought that were going to see sumos practicing. It was somewhat embarrassing that police were called because of the noise Ken and the former professional athlete were making.
Simply would have been nice to know what we were getting ourselves into before we booked this. Ken meant well and he taught us some interesting stuff, but we would have appreciated knowing that the experience did not involve seeing sumos practice. We still feel like we have to do this on our first trip to Japan.

Thank you for the nice comments.
But why would you say No Sumo ?? Obviously Not true....we had a professional Sumo athlete training and doing rituals with us. You personally did training and matches with a Sumo professional athlete.
Please change your statement to be truthful.
Sumo gets the power from Samurai warriors.
Sumo is not supposed to be quite.
That is how Sumo started 2000 years ago.
Sumo athletes train on inside and outdoor dojo.
Sumo Culture is not just wrestling.
Sumo Culture is Japanese Culture.
Our goal is to inform you of the main part of Sumo which is respect, passion. Shinto, Buddhism, Samurai and more.

Disappointing
Professional sumotoris were in Osaka so we had a probably fake sumotori gesticulating to entertain us
The police even cane as he was really noisy
Ken definitely talks too much. His comments are repetitive and not always relevant

Our Sumo athlete is a professional. He is passionate about Sumo Culture. Sumo is part of the Culture in Japan. Everything we talked about has strong connection to Sumo and Japanese Culture. *Calling our professional Sumo athlete fake is extremely insulting and untruthful.

Great knowledge of the area and very friendly people! Shin and Ken helped immerse ourselves in the sacred Sumo culture of Japan. We were taught many wrestling techniques while also educated on the spiritual importance of Sumo. If you wish to learn about Sumo wrestling in a friendly and authentic environment, I can’t recommend anybody else!

I would absolutely recommend this to anybody wanting to know more about sumo. The guide was great. His passion and knowledge of the sumo really shone through as he led you through the various elements of sumo. From the daily life, to the practice, to the tournaments. I came in knowing little of the sport (as an American) but came away with insights and appreciation. You will not regret it.

Hi, I'm looking for a morning tour for my family. There are 3 adults, 2 seniors, and 2 children (7 people). The children are ages 3 and 6, well-behaved. Is it possible to do a sumo tour on December 22nd? If the tour is not ok for children, do you have any suggestions for how we can see sumo wrestlers?
