This was a very interesting tour despite the early start. We knew that we had to be at the auction house before 0500hrs. Our guide, Nobby, was most informative and had an excellent approach and replies to all our questions. We were in the level 2 observation area (level 1 in Japan is the ground floor). Good view but we needed the explanation of the process and Nobby outlined this most clearly. His command of English was very good. Tuna auctioning in Japan is very regulated and at this auction one is observing the auction between the wholesalers (7) and the intermediaries (several hundred). Its a very fast process as each fish is auctioned separately by quality and weight and it takes less than 10 secs per fish. The auction goes from 0530 to 0630 hrs. Once completed we walked across the road to another huge building in which the intermediaries auction/sell their tuna to the retail outlets and restaurants. One does not see this process but there is viewing from above, down onto their specific areas. The tuna knives are most impressive and very expensive. Prices per kilogram of tuna go up very steeply. We then went to the older Tuskiji Outer Market, a more traditional market with hundreds of small food outlets and craft and tourist stalls/shops. The price for good quality tuna at some places was 2500 Yen per 100gm (25000 Yen per kilogram). This gave a good idea of the value of tuna. Can can be even more expensive in restaurants.
We enjoyed the whole experience but the actual auction was the best, seeing the real working activity of tuna management first hand. This is the biggest tuna auction in the world and is run at least 5 days a week. Very worthwhile.

The tour was fantastic! Mayumi was very knowledgeable of the fish market and its history. She was welcoming and warm from the outset.
Mayumi helped us to navigate both markets and gave us an insight we would not have had without a guide.

I can't recommend this tour highly enough. Emi was a wonderful guide. We started at the tuna auctions before heading to the old fish markets, and stopped in between for a sashimi breakfast and shopping at the new fish market.
The breakfast was amazing, super fresh and clearly a 'local joint'. Ok, there were other tourists (and us), but also plenty of bidders who had come straight from the tuna auctions for their breakfasts. We really felt as though we were seeing a part of Tokyo that we wouldn't otherwise have experienced had it not been for Emi's organisation.
Emi took us to the new market area (which is more or less opposite the tuna auctions). Having battled the crowds of tourists the previous day at the old fish markets, this was a real pleasure. We particularly liked how Emi personalised the experience, telling us about what she bought for cooking at home, and interesting observations like local snacks and drinking accompaniments.
We did end up at the old fish markets, which was better then our previous experience being a) a lot earlier in the morning and b) most importantly, with Emi. Emi was happy to act as interpreter for us, made the whole tour extremely interesting and even asked the VAT refund centre to open early for us.
Again, we can't recommend Emi's tour enough. It was one of the highlights of our visit to Tokyo.

We booked this tour for our first morning in Tokyo, knowing we'd be up early due to jet lag—and it turned out to be the perfect choice. Sachiyo-san met us at our hotel, and together we took a taxi to the tuna auction. Having her guide us was invaluable—not only did she navigate the less-than-obvious building entrance, but she also handled communication with the driver, making the journey seamless.
From the moment we arrived, Sachiyo-san’s knowledge and enthusiasm made the experience unforgettable. She provided rich historical and cultural insights about the tuna auction while guiding us through the markets with attentiveness, humor, and infectious energy. She anticipated our every need, found the best viewing spots for the auction, and explained the intricate roles and processes behind the bidding.
Beyond the auction, she helped us locate the perfect spot for a post-auction sushi breakfast (right next door to Sushi Dai, which already had a 4 hour wait at 6:30am!), and shop for stunning knives and other items, ensuring we got exactly what we were looking for. At the end of the tour, she even assisted us in securing a taxi back to our hotel. Our guide Emi was amazing! So knowledgeable about the auction. Even other people were listening in to our tour to learn more about the auction. After the auction, we had some incredible sushi from a place she recommended. Then we got to explore the markets and ended up getting so much cool stuff. We ordered some pottery and she helped us facilitate the transaction with the store, down to arranging shipping directly from the store to the US. Really went above and beyond. I would not hesitate to book another tour with her. She’s an expert on Tsukiji and Toyosu!

We really enjoyed the tour of the fish market and auction. Our tour guide Emi was great - very knowledgeable and helpful and good to talk to. Highly recommended, we will certainly try to get other tours with her when we return to Tokyo!

We had a great morning with Yumi. The meetup at 5 am was a little worrying but it worked out perfectly and she was waiting for us when we got to the appointed location (taxi required). She had a great depth of information about what we were seeing, came prepared with visual material, and has excellent English skills and a lovely personality. Tip: go hungry and you can enjoy a market breakfast

Yumi was a great guide, who is very proactive and took good care of us! She is very knowledgeable about the markets and came with printed guides that she prepared for us! She also drafted a message in Japanese so we could pass it to the taxi driver to get us to the right place to meet her (fish market is huge and we won'twant to get lost at 5am and miss the tuna auction!). All these little thoughts count! Yumi speaks English well.

Best tour I have had in Japan. The experience was unique, interesting, fun and now I know so much more when ordering sushi. 10,000 whole Blue Tunas get graded, auctioned and shipped in a day ... amazing. We then got to tour the wholesale stores in the same complex where we found a family run knife store, true craftsman. Bought several knives (some of the best in the world) and they even engraved them. Off to complete the lifecycle of the blue tuna by going to a local market where they were sold (along with other seafood and vegetables) followed by a walk through a neighborhood with cute places to eat. Felt less like a tourist and more like a part of the everyday locals lifestyle. As usual everything was so clean, well organized and fresh.
Our tour guide, Yumi, was amazing. Excellent english, comfortable energy, fun and of course very knowledgable. She followed up with other recommendations (sites and dining) via Whatsapp and sent pics. Can't wait to spend time with her on another tour. Thanks Yumi !!
