Great Cultural Insight
2021年10月
Miel was fabulous. She was informative, charming, and fun. The tour was very tasty and it lasted MUCH longer that I expected. It was worth every penny and more. We we did the tour in mid October so we were pleased that it started early. Even so, it did get pretty hot by the end of the tour but we expected that in October and it only got that hot because she took us to so MANY places.

I have been to Mexico many times but learned a great deal and now appreciate the culture and food EVEN MORE. Thanks, Miel!!

Mexican food where the Mexicans eat and live
2021年10月
Our tour guide told us we would be easy to find at the Pitillal meeting point because we would be the only tourists in the square. True!

Miel was our tour guide and she lives in, and loves, Pitillal, and it shows. She not only knows the places, she knows the people in the restaurants and at the carts. One of our stops was a restaurant that makes tamales. They close during the day to make them, starting with fresh corn, then they open at night to diners, but we got the private tour and very good tamales too.

We ate tacos, many many breakfast tacos, and they are different from dinner tacos as it turns out. The fish taco was one of the best I have ever had. This tour was a great time walking and eating in real Mexico.

Solo Food Tour
The Taste of Pitillal food your was amazing! I always do food tours when I travel and this was nice as it was off the beaten path and where are the locals are working and residing. Bernardo was wonderful, I had my own private tour so had a great time enjoying the food and learning about the town. He also shared stories of his family growing up and their experience with food which made it much more personable, which I enjoyed. It was definitely a lot of food, very filling but I tried to eat every last bite - I failed lol. I would definitely recommend this tour. I drove and there is a parking garage under the plaza.

Delicious and charming! A must-do if you love local cuisine and culture
2021年7月
Bernardo was an excellent guide! All the food we had was delicious. We learned a lot about the process of making the food, the local culture, and genuinely enjoyed getting to know Bernardo. It is hard to pick a favorite food, but the seafood tostada and the tamales are my top two. This was a great way to start our trip and gave us a more local feel which we definitely wanted.

Taste of Pitillal - Part 2
2021年7月
We returned to Puerto Vallarta this summer and one of the first things we did was rebook the Taste of Pittillal Tour. The food was so good the first time we had to go back and experience it again....and it didn't disappoint!

We were met by Miel Garcia in the plaza and, due to COVID precautions, our family of four had a private tour this time. Miel was friendly and enthusiastic and we all immediately hit it off. After a quick temperature check and explanation that masks would be required entering and exiting the restaurants, we were off.

Most of the spots we stopped were the same as the last time...which we were excited about because (1) it was SO good last time, and (2) it was nice to see these small, family businesses still surviving (and thriving) through a pandemic. There was one new stop (a woman-owned place that may have been my personal favorite) and one other place that was the same but had moved to a new location across the street. Otherwise, it was fun to walk into places and remember little nuances we'd forgotten from 3 years ago.

The food was just as amazing this time around. We all had different favorites and all were surprised by different unique things that were not the primary food item. The shrimp consomme at Pichis is delicious. We all want to know how Robles makes their fried tortillas for their birria tacos. I would have bet the Atole (a warm, somewhat thick, corn-based, vanilla flavored drink) at La Tia Anita would not be in my wheelhouse. It was delicious. The prior visit, the tamale options at La Tia Anita's were a more traditional poblano pepper or pork (I think). This time it was a strawberry dessert tamale. I'm not a big sweets person and was skeptical, but was pleasantly surprised -- all of us enjoyed it. Oh yeah, and the tacos at every stop are as good as or better than what you'll get anywhere in PV -- certainly the best we had all week by far.

Just as importantly, we thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Miel. Between bites of amazing food, we discussed travel (comparing stories of food experiences in Paris) and how "American Mexican" food differs from food in Mexico. We debated what foods are uniquely American. And we chatted about the impact of COVID on her, on the tourist/service industry in PV and on the locals living in Pitillal.

The 3 hours went by quickly and we all left absolutely stuffed....multiple times we found ourselves finishing tacos we said we were too full to finish.

As an aside, in case safety is a concern, we had the only non-Mexican faces in the area we toured (which is often the case) but never once felt unsafe or felt we had to be "careful". The locals were friendly (often smiling or greeting us) and the staff at the food stops were extremely gracious. I'd go back to eat at any of the places we visited without a guide without any more concern than I would visiting anywhere I've traveled -- and I do not speak Spanish.

So, if you want to get a real sense of Mexico, its people and its food, do not skip this tour. I promise you that you will not be disappointed. And if you are lucky enough to get Miel to lead your tour, please be sure to tell her we say hi!

Slice of Mexican culture with an excellent guide!
2021年6月 • カップル・夫婦
The Taste of Pitillal tour was phenomenal. My goal with this trip was to get a concentrated taste of Mexican culture. Just on the outskirts of the tourist industry, Pitillal is a bustling slice of Mexican life in Vallarta, and getting to walk among locals and eat what they eat and experience what they experience was very fun. Would highly recommend Pitillal.

Miel was our tour guide and we were fortunate that we were the only ones on the tour, so it was a private tour! She was friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely fun to be around. She taught us so much about the local culture, and we talked about everything - food, politics, climate, and just learning one another and becoming friends. She was a joy to spend an afternoon with and I would highly recommend her as a tour guide.

Authentic and Charming Mexican Experience in Pitilal
2021年7月 • 一人
My husband and I were treated to an extra special private tour of Pitillal since we were the only ones with a booking today! Our guide was Al and he was very friendly, personable, and likable person to spend 3 hours with. We immediately felt like long time friends with him especially when we found out he had family in Yuba City, CA, US where we also have relations.

Anyway, the tour itself was fun and interesting. We learned a lot about the history and culture of the food made in Pitillal. Everything was locally made and many places were family-owned by generations of Mexicans instead of major tourist chains. Al helped us order food, translated menus, and sat and chatted with us about the food at every stop. I am 5 months pregnant so have aversions to everything but Al made sure to pick out foods to my liking. It was also well paced so that you don’t get full too quickly and I didn’t tire out as well. My favorite spots included a tortilla factory where we went behind the counter to see the production and even enjoyed a tortilla hot off the machine; also, we went inside an authentic residence where tamales and atol were sold. The tamale place is normally closed on weekdays with long lines on weekends but they allowed us into their home on a weekday and we watched family members shucking corn husks, slicing corn, shredding chicken, and kneading dough. The tamale was the best I will ever have in this lifetime and so fluffy!!!! We also visited the local church where a mass was being held for a quincenera.

This experience was absolutely authentic and was a breath of fresh air to spend time with locals away from the tourists. Everything was inexpensive as well.

Highly recommend to anyone thinking of booking this tour! Thank you Al!!!!!!!

Learned so much, ate so much
2021年6月
Despite the fact that my family did the Pitillal tour on a hot, HOT day, it was still an amazing and delicious experience. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Our tour guide was Miel (aka Honey). She was delightful, knowledgeable, and the perfect hostess. She ensured that we enjoyed our food, answered our questions, and shared cool facts about the history of Pitillal and the dishes we sampled.

Do what I did and skip breakfast. We were offered at least 5-6 generously sized tacos (OMG the birria and carnitas, yum), tamales, chicharrones, fruit, popsicles, and various non-alcoholic beverages. My kid wanted to try churros, so Miel led our group to a churro stand on this morning (even though I understand churros are more of a late afternoon and nighttime thing). Miel was great about making sure we were all hydrated on this hot day. She also made sure to ask people in our group if they had any food allergies or sensitivities. Very accommodating.

A great experience! Definitely check it out if you want to try new and delicious foods and see a PV neighborhood that's off the beaten path!
