Pick up to and from hotel was reliable. The bus was not a small shuttle but a large bus- many locals and people on tours on the same bus. This is only the bus and you are your own guide. The bus first stopped at a very clean stop just outside of Hanoi- prices a lot cheaper than Hanoi old quarter. You have time for soup if you missed breakfast.
The travel is very steep and it does take 5 hours. The guide on the bus was for the other people on tours but he was very helpful and dropped me close to my Homestay - an easy 3 minute walk as I stayed one night at the lovely Mai Chau Dreams Homestay.
If you want to see a lot of the area and need a guide you will need to book a tour. A great service if you just want the bus.

Three hour trip by road with one rest stop at a clean well equipped services. Seats are not large, more cosy, but I was fine being 6 foot tall. Our driver was safe on the road. Good communications from the shuttle bus office made sure we were at the correct pick up point on time. Great place to visit big contrast to the hustle and bustle in Hanoi. Plenty of good low cost accommodation available.
