I always was skeptical of guided tours. Being a good tour guide (same as being a good teacher) requires that you know ten times more about the subject than you have time to tell.
Our tour with Marco was just such an exception. Marco is not a professional tour guide, but a professional winemaker, running the family winery Cascina Galarin, and giving wine tours as Langa Wine Tours in his spare time :-). He picked us (my wife, myself and two young Swedish couples) at the train station in Turin and drove us to the places with so familiar sounding names - Alba, Asti, Roero, Monferrato.
This area of Piedmont has thousands of wineries ranging from huge commercial winemakers to very small family ones. Most of the small ones sell their grapes to the large producers, but some are dedicated to producing small volume high quality wines. Cascina Galarin is one of them, and despite relatively small volume his wines are available in the USA (I just bought a couple of bottles for Thanksgiving) and are very favorably reviewed in the Wine Enthusiast Magazine
We visited three wineries: a relatively large one (as the small wineries go), a medium (Marco’s own) and a really small one, where all wine-making equipment would fit in an average basement of an average American house. But the quality of all of them was excellent. And so were the explanations of the wine-making process, variations between different grapes, different areas, different slopes, different years. There was nothing he could not answer, and it was his enthusiasm that made it exciting.
It was a day well spent and was worth every penny. We would highly recommend it if you are in the area.

Incredible trip through the wine country outside of Turin. Our tour guide Marco had a ton of insight into the industry and region. He managed to pack three different vineyards and a lunch stop into the day. The views along the way were also amazing. Great way to spend a day.

Marco is very knowledgeable and knows “the lay of the land”. His understanding of the various regions in Piedmont was extensive. Our appreciation of how the types of grapes, soil condition, moisture and the duration in the oak barrels eventually add to the characteristics of the wine was clearer after his explanation. Really appreciate it.

I cannot recommend this tour enough. Marco is a farmer first who makes wine, scratch that, who makes fantastic wine, and his passion for the land, his home and his craft is evident. Our tour was made up of three couples who had never met each other before, and whether you are a rank amateur wine drinker like me, or a knowledgeable aficionado , like one of our group, Marco takes time to discuss his craft with an approachable ease. His English is accented but clear and understandable. The wines he introduced us to were all great, though everyone in my group agreed that his took too marks. The restaurant he took us to for lunch was yet another high point., with great simple well prepared regional cuisine. This tour may be considered a little pricy by some, but it is a great value when you consider the experience you get from it.

This tour was amazing and we couldn’t recommend it enough.
Marco is a local wine maker and he is an incredible guide, breaking down and explaining the vast intricacies of wine making and the local wine industry of one of the wine capitals of the world.
We got to see and visit 3 separate wineries, specifically chosen by Marco, to give us an idea of what different sized wineries looked like and to give us the opportunity to learn and especially taste/experience a number of different wines in the area. Marco and also the rest of the winery owners were incredibly welcoming, passionate, and knowledgeable.
Marco picked us up from the Alba train station which was easy enough to get to from Torino but I do believe he offers to pick you up from certain areas if possible. Total driving time throughout the day was minimal as each spot was seemingly planned to minimize time in the car. Our group was 2 couples. Tried maybe a total of 18-20 different wines. Lunch was at a local restaurant and at least for us was not included in final price, but it was a local restaurant with seemingly reasonable prices and no frills.
You have the opportunity to purchase these wines after each tasting and Marco helps you with shipping (he ships them for you). It was a full day, picked up around 10 am and not dropped off until around 5.
This tour can be for all dedicated wine fanatics as well more casual drinkers (me) due to Marco’s immense knowledge on the subject (he owns and operates a winery in the area).
Overall we highly recommend this tour. Despite this only having 1 review on trip advisor as of now, (Via tour also has some reviews for more assurance if you want to take the time), it was an amazing and authentic experience. If you’re in the area, it’s a must-do

Marco collected us from Torino and drove us to the famous Barollo and Barbaresco wine growing area of Piemonte, the Langhe, where he was born and is now a winemaker. His knowledge of the area and the complex structure of wine naming based on the grapes used and the position of each plot in the area was amazing. We saw his vines and learned about the soil, water, microclimate and sunshine needs and how the winemaker deals with his vines to care for them and therefore grow them for the best wine. The scenery was gorgeous with vineyards and hilltop medieval towns and castles as far as the eye could see. We tasted Marcos wines and two other winemakers wines to enjoy the differences. We had a delicious lunch at a restaurant in a medieval town with narrow cobbled streets and a looming castle tower. We discussed the other famous products of the Alba area, hazelnuts and truffles. A wonderful day and experience . Grazie Mille Marco.
