My friends and I embarked on the Five Day Salkantay Trek. It was a great experience, and we could not have done it without our amazing tour guides Juan De Dios and Diego. Our tour guides were also very knowledgable, teaching us much about the history and culture of the places we stopped by. The whole team made the trek so much easier, helping us carry our equipment, tents, sleeping bag, food, etc. The food was amazing and the price was very reasonable. I would recommend this tour group to anybody who is looking to do this trek.

The Salkantay path showed to be challenging phisical and mentally could have done it without the help of Daniel. He was always there for me with coca leaves and the condor pee that is how he call it he is humoruous and knowledgeable

Our guides Diego and Juan de dios went above and beyond in their service. In addition to them, the porter and cooks were absolutely amazing. Each day was clearly laid out, our campsites were ready when we arrived and the food was delicious (I had the vegetarian option). We truly felt as though we were a family with tierras vivas. I would recommend them to anyone who wants to go on a trek to Peru. I will most definitely be going back to them for any future bookings!

Such a wonderful trek from beginning to end. Juan de Dios was a fantastic guide. He was so knowledgeable about everything florea, fauna, culture and history history. He was very organized and super fun making the entire trek so enjoyable. Food was amazing they were able to prepare 3 meals a day. I would absolutely book another tour with this company.

Salkantay trek with tierras vivas in July 2022
Lots of pros and cons, but tldr: I would choose another company next time.
The views on this trek are stunning and difficult mostly the first two days, then it gets easier in terms of walking, but the mosquitoes arrive day 3 with the jungle. The first and second night were really cold but then after a good sweater was enough.
Overall the company feels highly disorganized. It felt like we were learning and improvising a-lot as we went, which is fine if it’s a new company but it has enough reviews to know that they have done this plenty of times. Example, they booked a different ticket for me to machu picchu then the rest of the group. (A two day Inca trail ticket, which has different access to Machu Picchu) It was not my guides fault, but his solution was for me to wait while the others go explore the other mountain.. and I denied because I wasn’t just going to wait around so I explored myself.
I wish I would have known the level of English of the guide before hand. I understand it’s a lot to ask for English speaking guide in Peru, feels entitled, but my intention was to learn and it truly required a lot of patience to exchange information. I actually ended up hiring a different guide while the rest of the group explored the second mountain that they didn’t include in my ticket. The guide was nice but maybe overworked/underpaid? I don’t know.
It was overall a little unprofessional in terms of the help I received. Another example: I needed to buy a bus ticket to go up to Machu Picchu and there was a long, slow moving line and the guide took me to the back and said okay, you buy the ticket, good night. I asked him to wait with me for a bit then let him go because I just felt like I was forcing someone to help me. Thankfully I speak enough basic Spanish to get by but I definitely did not feel supported then.
The guide did run up the hill once’s to get my gloves when I lost them, so really grateful for that. Not all bad, but could definitely improve. Most of the problems that came up were definitely higher up from the company.
The chef was great, the food was delicious. I would say the meals were carb heavy but we were walking so much I didn’t mind. I did ask for a vegetarian diet and one day was served quinoa with very small diced tomatoes and salchichas that looked like tomatoes to me. I ate it and realized closer to the end that it was meat. I told the guide but his response was along the lines of at least you are not allergic or anything. You are okay. Again I think it was lost in translation. For me it’s a spiritual thing so I didn’t feel so good after and definitely did not feel heard.
The horseman who I had the least interaction with was okay but one thing did happen. We were asked to leave our duffel bags inside the tent and they would take them. One day I forgot to put my kindle inside the duffel bag so it was just sitting inside my tent. It’s clear that it’s mine, and I wish he would have just stuffed it in my bag, but instead he put it in his. I had to ask him when I realized it was lost and he said oh ya he has it, but he was going to be leaving the next morning and I can’t say that I would have gotten it back if I didn’t realize in time.
The best interaction I had was someone from the office named Sandra. She personally helped me borrow a day pack and was so kind, so ready to provide any sort of service I needed. Gratitude!!
Overall grateful for the experience, it wasn’t the worst although I pointed out some of the hardest parts. I really enjoyed my time with the other travelers!
I truly think for the price you will pay, you can get a better organized trek especially if you are only English speaking.

The Salkantay trek is a stunning alternative to the traditional Inca trail. The Salkantay trek is a once in a lifetime experience with beautiful landscape, at high altitudes (Salkantay pass at 4,600m) and mind blowing scenario. We very much appreciated the Tierras Vivas support before and throughout the trek. Our guide Roger was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the trek and the history of traditions. The trek ends in Machu Picchu being beyond imagination!
