Excellent service and a wonderful and warm experience!

We engaged though_inaka for a private day excursion to Okuizumo from the port of Sakaiminato during our circle Japan cruise. Sameera helped put together a tour for 4 of us based on our interest in tatara iron and sword-making. He was very accommodating and easy to work with, given our limited timeframe in port.

In Okuizumo, the iron museum and sword-forging demonstration by a master forger was unforgettable. We thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on soba-making and delicious lunch in a traditional house that is wonderfully maintained by the community group. We were also treated to samisen and singing by our personable soba-making hosts. Sameera was very informative and enlightening on the Okuizumo legacy of iron making and sword forging, as well as rice cultivation practices.

Culturally, it was very rewarding to see the inner countryside and meet its warm-hearted residents. All in all, a high-quality experience...next time I will allot more time! I would highly recommend though_inaka to those that want to go off the beaten path and explore a piece of the "heart" of Japan.

We participated to the Uncover the roots of Japan tour.
A very genuine insight of what made Japan great not so many decades ago.

It was really beautiful to see that the old Japanese spirit is kept alive by who lives in rural areas through the community bonds and mutual help.
Our guides led us to those places and situations usually unreachable by foreign people, from Shrines subtle secrets to small mountain village everyday life.
The locals also greeted us as neighbors with sincere enthusiasm.

Absolutely recommended to who wants to deepen the understanding of (authentic) Japan.

I am infinitely grateful for having joined the Ikigai tour with Though Inaka. Sameera, Yuki and the lovely people of Shimane will forever have a special place in my heart. They offer the kind of experience that you didn’t know you wanted until it happens! The tour was very well organized. Every single detail was thought of and much appreciated. Through the different workshops, stories and connections, you are inspired and encouraged to find your own ikigai. This is something that you take with you that is valuable yet priceless. May the abundance you share with the world comes back to you a million times more!

This tour was recommended by a friend of mine. Before visiting Simane, Sammera was very helpful to answer my questions. Our tour guide Shino was friendly and knowledgeable.

Shino introduced us the history of Matsue castle, and then took us to Tanabe art museum. We got to see a collection of historical pottery for tea. Later on, we visited an organic tea farm and got to make our own tea. It was such a fantastic experience that I never had it before. In the evening, we had a tea ceremony in our Ryokan. It was very interesting that the utensils were resembled to what we saw at the art museum. Next day we visited Itohara Memorial Museum and Tatara factory. The food through the tour was extremely good and I really enjoyed it.

By joining this tour, it gave me an opportunity to explore the rural area of Japan. The environment, people, food, everything was so wonderful. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who visits Shimane.

From the outsanding Matsue Castle, to an art museum that has a wide collection of tea potteries, to the organic tea farm whose owners love of nature is really remarkable, to a 132-yr-old ryokan that h as housed influential people, to the Iron factory museum that show the importance of iron work befor e, to a resto that combines Western and Japanese cuisine that only uses ingredients from the surrounding farm and mountain, every place is endowed with Samurai culture and influence. If you want to know why and how, then join the trip "Samurai Still Here."
This trip opened my eyes on how amazing samurais are. Their culture and influences that are up until now in the present are still widely used. Sameera and Shino, our tour guides and organizers, were very kind and informative. They were able to assist us and answer all questions about the tour remarkably. If given a chance and time, I will love to join any of their tour again.

I joined a tour called Samurai are Still Here, and it was fantastic! Leading up to the tour, Sameera was available to answer questions and listen to concerns. As soon as the tour began it was clear Shino had put a ton of thought into every experience she arranged.

I've lived in Shimane Prefecture for about five years, and since I'm a history and culture buff I've done a lot to learn about the region. Even so, I learned so many new things from this tour! When it comes to specialized topics such as history, my Japanese isn't the best, but having Shino with us to translate explanations or answer questions opened up the stories of every place we visited.

Every destination was related to samurai history or embodied how that history has carried over into the modern day. In particular, Shino introduced us to people who she thought showed "samurai spirit" in their work or attitude towards life. My favorite people to meet were the Fujiharas, who own an organic tea farm and small tea processing factory. Apparently it's common to use chemical fertilizer and things like that in tea cultivation, but Mr. Fujihara doesn't even wear mosquito repellent near his plants! He and his wife were also incredibly gracious to show us everything from the tea fields to how to brew the best cup of green tea. I've always wanted to join some kind of tea experience, so this part of the tour was a dream come true!

Joining this tour introduced me to so many amazing places that I had never heard of (again, I've lived here five years!), and gave me a fresh perspective on the place where I live. I sincerely hope I can join another tour in the future and learn even more!

I took this tour in July of 2023 and it was such a delight. It had an easy to understand theme and each activity made sense within that theme. The tour organizer was very friendly and knowledgeable.

I had been wanting to come to see Izumo-taisha for awhile now and was able to explore it deeper than I would have had I come together with friends independent of the tour. The storytellers we met were incredibly informative and easy to talk to. They had answers to every small obscure question we could think of.

Interacting with the locals was also a delight. Some came out of their way to deliver ice cream to us on a very hot day although their “stage” of the tour had already ended. None of my friends believed me until I showed them the videos, but we made soba noodles AND a knife!

Coming back home, I was able to share with my Japanese friends a rich history, including customs that are unique to the area, and photographs of beautiful landscapes that they didn’t even know existed.

I can’t wait to come back!

I had an absolutely amazing tour of Shimane organized by Sameera. Right from the start, Sameera was extremely helpful with suggestions on which bus to take, meeting us at the bus terminal and organizing private transportation throughout the tour. He was extremely knowledgeable about each site that we visited, adding to the already impressive amount of information provided by our wonderful tour guides.

The food at our traditional country house in Okuizumo was incredible, with a traditional Japanese setting and flavors prepared by Lisa and her partner. We got to harvest some of the herbs and vegetables for dinner, as well as preparing a traditional Japanese bath with wood fire. Our hosts were so lovely and accommodating, answering all of our questions and taking us to visit the local shrine.

The support staff on the trip were also incredible. Chie and Shino were our tour guides for the Izumo Taisha Shrine and the Okuizumo Tatara Sword Museum respectively. Both guides were so kind and knowledgeable, making the tour such an enjoyable experience. The soba making class was a great experience and we had so much fun with the soba master. He was also so kind, bringing us ice cream when we were at the Unshu Chuzen knife making class. The knife making class was so much fun and we had the chance to buy high quality traditional Japanese knives from the family. They customized my knife by carving my family name into the knife at no additional cost, which I thought was really special.

I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone interested in Japanese culture, as you will experience so many different things that you would not usually and everyone you meet is so kind and friendly.

Though Inaka is an extraordinary travel experience for exploring rural areas of western Japan. I was quite fortunate to have these travel experiences, which gave me the chance to bond with the unique individuals (IKIGUYS) and to discover these off-the-beaten-path locations (Inaka retreat), both of which are extremely valuable for fully absorbing Japanese customs and culture. I had the chance to try several different things, such as crafting traditional Japanese knives, soba noodles, mochi, and tofu, as well as tasting traditional tofu burgers with fresh berry smoothies, and Joined a Zen meditation session. I spent the night at the UZUMAKI, a classic warehouse that had been refurbished, and tasted several unique, innovative dishes cooked with homegrown organic vegetables and herbs. I am highly recommending this unique travel experience to anybody who's looking to add something unique to life and collect unique travel memories that you can't have anywhere.
