Excellent experience, gives a new respect for the art form. Each stroke must be precise, which requires some concentration.

So often when you travel it's about rushing around and consuming as you bounce around the city. It was nice to take a break from that. With this class you get to pause and go deeper in appreciating Japanese culture and art and language. You end producing something you can take home with you and be proud of displaying. It was also nice that this class takes you out of central Tokyo, giving you a chance to see the real city and where people actually live. Hoyu is a patient and supportive teacher. And I am especially grateful for her taking me on only a couple hours' notice.

I’m very happy to know my teaching calligraphy and some basic Japanese -kanji, kana, katakana- became your gateway to study Japanese.
It’s great you got relaxed and felt how we live daily lives at the center of Tokyo, not in the high scrapers but at the bed town of Tokyo. That will help you to understand Japanese people better.
I’m looking forward to your coming again the next time you come to Japan.

My husband and I participated in a calligraphy class with Hoyu. It was so much fun. Hoyu picked us up from the train station and walked us via a sweet shop. The classroom was comfortable and all the supplies were great. We had a great time learning from Hoyu.
After the class, we had a lovely lunch with Hoyu and chat about life in Japan.
This was such an enriching experience. I want to go back for more!

Around a year ago I took part in Hoyu's calligraphy teaching class more than a couple of times and had so much fun learning and creating something new each time :) Now walking around with my custom made shopping bag with my hand written art print on it I remember all the nostalgic memories of those good times in the past. Really hope to visit Japan one day again and learn more and more about its amazing culture!

I visited here again and wanted to share my experience. I had visited a few months ago and Hoyu had kindly taught me how to draw "kokorozashi" which means "ambition." I visited her class room again and was able to get a tote bag made from my previous work! I carry it around everywhere now. As usual, Hoyu treated me with respect and was very kind in her instruction. I savor my experience at her classroom every time that I go there. Now I have a memento of my time there that I can carry around with me everywhere. Thank you as always for the amazing experience and the new knowledge I gained about Japanese culture. I definitely recommend for any visitors to Japan!

Japanese calligraphy has always been an object of fascination for me, and I was able to learn how to do it on my own for the first time at Akiko's workshop. I was amazed at how much discipline and focus it requires, but Akiko was very kind and helpful in teaching me the basics. But on top of that being able to learn calligraphy from her was a significant experience for me - it allowed me to focus solely on something and clear my mind. Writing calligraphy almost felt like a form of meditation, and it taught me so much about Japanese elegance. Her lessons were a very special experience for me and I recommend it for anyone who wishes to learn more about Japan.

I have always been interested in writing Japanese kanji in a traditional way. I was able to experience that in this lesson. It was definitely not as easy as I thought it would be (why did I think it would be so easy??), but it was actually more fun than I had imagined. Hoyu is an experienced teacher and calligrapher, so I knew I was in good hands. She helped me practice the basic strokes and then gave me a chance to do them on my own. Everything seemed simple until I tried it on my own. I realized I needed to concentrate harder. The lesson time is not long enough to become a master of calligraphy, but it was long enough to be enjoyable, entertaining, and leave me with a hunger to study more!! Definitely a "must experience" for anyone traveling or staying in Japan for an extended time. As an added bonus, I went over to Koganei Park after the lesson. There was a lot of cool things to do and see there as well!! Highly recommended, will probably book a lesson again if I can find the time!

You did great and should have more confidence in yourself. Next time we can prepare the ink ourselves with the ink stone and ink stick in the traditional Japanese way. I look forward to teaching you again.

Since a young age I have been fascinated by the elegant essence that is the backbone of Japanese culture. But it wasn't until I visited Japan and had the opportunity to experience first hand the untainted nature of Japanese traditional calligraphy (shodō). After learning how to hold the brush and perform some basic strokes I was instructed by Hoyu-sensei step by step how to write my name in Kanji( Japanese ideograms) and got to practice again and again before creating my final piece on a beautiful frame. It is definitely a challenging task but a most rewarding one as you get to marvel the fruits of your effort comparing your first and final piece. This was a great opportunity for me as my Japanese skill is still on a beginners level, having found a teacher that can provide this opportunity for me in fluent English was hard to come by. The place is easily accessible and just a ten minute walk away from the nearest train station so I would definitely recommend this to everyone staying in or just visiting Tokyo. Trust me it is worth it you will not regret it!
