I felt like I was in a Ghibli film. You enter the magic world after passing through the bellhouse at the bottom. The atmosphere of sight and sound was absolutely strange. It was so peaceful and engulfing me that it seemed different to the world I came from before the bellhouse. After wandering around for while I got the kind of feeling, that there was something/someone else, a power...
I never had such a feeling before in my life. I would call that a truely transcendent experience. It is definitely a holy place and it explained me the realm of Ghibli. Princess Mononoke has its roots in such places. I didn't know they exist.

It’s a real wonder how a temple that looks so small and inconspicuous at first glance can reveal itself to be like a sacred little corner of a Ghibli world, where the appearance of Totoro would not be surprising, but somehow expected.
A little kingdom of lush moss, dim light and the occasional rays of sunshine lighting up spots on the thick green carpet of the ground, Namikiri Fudoson is a tiny Buddhist temple, a gate to another world of tranquility and silence.
The thick cedar trees seem infinitely tall, as though holding up the sky with the crowns, their tops almost unreachable to the eye.
Two tree trunks, both worthy of being Totoro’s crib, flank the Fudō-son (Buddhist divinity) enshrined beside a small waterfall which trickles through the crevices of a huge rock.
Local legend says that Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of the Shikoku Pilgrimage chose this place to rest on his way to Muroto. After he finished his meal, he noticed that a large rock was about to fall. Kobo Daishi found an elegant solution, and propped it up with his cedar chopsticks. Over time, the chopsticks are said to have grown into two tall trees supporting the rock from ever falling down, and people have enshrined Fudō-son behind the trunks of those two “used-to-be-chopsticks” trees. It is said that a person with a bad heart can never pass between the cedar trees, so strong is their power.
Also famous as a habitat for fireflies, Namikiri Fudoson is away from the main road, at the edge of the forest.
Note: There are no parking facilities. There is space to stop at the roadside, but please be considerate of other drivers and pedestrians.
