Huge monastery in a valley. It has a mixture of different styles and is very impressive and richly decorated. Some impressive wall paintings.

If you are travelling in Tibet, you should take the opportunity to visite the Samye Monastery. The first buddhist monastery in Tibet, and the place where buddhism started in Tibet. Established in around 780, and restored and renovated, the monastery is really beautiful, and around 200 monks make it a lively place. Even the site, with mountains all around make the place worth visiting. Take the kora With fellow pilgrims.Travel permit is needed. You can get it via your agencie.
It's a 3 hours drive from Lhasa to Samye, but you should seriously consider staying there overnight, and include a visite to the Chim Puk Hermitage including a fine hike up to the caves and even up to the top of the peak (if you are acclimaticed). Bring water.

You have to visit this, the oldest and first monastery. We are lucky to experience the chanting and praying over 2 hours and the Monitor or head monk blessed us and allowed us to video the whole event and have a picture with him. This is the monastery to visit, dating back to year 757 !

It's not easy as a westerner to visit - you need a guide, Tibet permit and alien pass to get these you need to visit the police headquarters in the nearby city, these passes are required due to the proximity of the boarders of India and Butan - just in case you decide to slip over the boarder! But if you are interested in tibetan culture it is worth the trip. The drive up there was lovely with amazing scenery of the Bramaputra River and prayer mountainThe monestry was built in the mid 8th century 775AD it is the first buddhist monsetry built in Tibet with the help of Indian Masters. Well worth it if you have the time.

It is not easy to visit Samye monastery as a foreigner. You must have an "alien" pass in addition to the Tibet permit. You need to personally visit police headquarters of nearby county along with your tour guide to acquire this pass. Although it was finally a simple enough exercise, yet for the first time it comes across as intimidating.
This being our first travel outside of Lhasa was especially made special by the sight of Yarlung Tsangpo or Brahmaputra as it is called in India. This was our first time in our lifetime to see mighty Brahmaputra river in all its majesty. Samye is now easily accessible through road. In the pass it required a boat ride across Brahmaputra to visit the monastery.

Monastery itself was calm and had a serene experience about it. Burnt during cultural revolution, it has pretty much been revived to its former glory. It has three floors - each inspired by a different architecture - Chinese, Tibetan and the top floor being Indian. It has a nominally functioning restaurant with Ok food. We found local Tibetans playing a version of Indian chaupad game with loud voices and engaged mannerism.

The visitor traffic was mild, and one can visit Samye at leisure. While the ground floor is accessible to all, first and second floor require one to climb very steep stairs. Samye itself has many age-old Buddhist artifacts, statues, ornaments and a major collection of manuscripts.

At least a couple of Tibetan Lamas walked to us with a humble “Namaste” grateful for the undying cultural ties between Tibet and India.

Whenever I go back to Tibet, Samye is on my list of things to visit again. I still feel the calmness and serenity that radiated out of Samye.

1.5 hr drive from Tsetang, Samye Chimpu is considered part of Samye Monastery and is 5 min drive apart. Chimpu is is the hermitage of the nuns and monks. Morning assembly hall with chanting, gongs, drums and long horns was fantastic. One hour uphill walk to visit many pf the multiplr monk meditation caves- which can be visited and are extremely interesting and special. Beautiful view of Yellow River which goes to India and countryside, from the top. Altho not listed separately in Tripadvisor, not to be missed, golden color stupa at top.
Samye Monastery, 5 min drive away-built in 8th century and first monastery in Tibet. Shaped like a mandala- a stupa of different color at each of the 4 angles . Beautiful stupa and artwork, statues in the multiple niches around the stupa. Samye had main building- multi levels, tibetan, chinese and indian style on each level.
Both are not to be missed
