My wife and I hiked the arches and cave from the public beach access. It's labeled but easy to miss since it's very small with a small area to park a few cars across the street. Google directions take you past the point and closer to the paid private parking lot which features painted fences in a large painted sign. If you see these you have gone too far. Turn around and look for the small access point a few houses down.
From the beach you will have to hike up the cliffs near the water to see the arches and eventually the cave.
We went on the rainiest day on record so we weren't able to go down into the cave since climbing surfaces were slick and the waves were crashing into the cave making it possibly unsafe. But it looks possible with some climbing skills and dry surfaces. Still we were able to see the petroglyphs from the entrance of the cave and we had a lot of fun watching the waves crash against the rocks. There are also some holes that spew air and water when the waves crash. Overall a pretty cool place to visit.

Took us over an hour to arrive, we always wanted and were curious about visiting this site. Once there, the parking, location and overall appearance was disappointing. Place not well maintained. Trash, stray dogs, and debris. A gentleman selling souvenirs controlled the entrance to the site. Ten dollars per head. Since we were already there, we felt no other option than to pay and enter. The gentleman was very polite and provided a brief explanation of the site. No signs, pamphlets, no toilets, map, etc. if you don’t understand Spanish, you are at a lost. Even if you understand Spanish, the brief was so quick and expedient and very difficult to grasp. The place is unsafe. But the views are beautiful once you get up there. Not worth $10 per head. No government or private entity oversight.

We stopped by on a whim and was wearing flip flops. I did bring my 4 yo and she did fine. We did not go all the way to the beach as there was a thunder storm in the distance coming in and had started raining. However, we did park in the lot and paid. I saw the free reviews after as I had not had this planned prior to showing up. Was able to make my way in flip flops but would suggest better footwear. The rocks and arches were pretty and nice to see. Is it worth paying for? Meh, I probably would have went the free version had I known better.

The area at Cueva del Indio was awesome. I did not go into the cave itself. My daughter did. It is climbing and difficult and I am not very agile at my old age. The crack in my picture is one way to climb in. But the area is great for hiking and seeing the Seven Arches. Definitely need tennis shoes. We paid for parking and it was worth it for us to have someone to explain where to go and what to look for. Locals park along the side of the road, but it was not obvious to a tourist where you could park and where to go hike. We might try to find it on our next trip, but it was good to have a parking place, a restroom, and water for sale. Don't forget the sunscreen. I didn't think I needed it for a cave, but definitely did for the hike. I burned my shoulders. The views were beautiful. If you go far enough you will see lots of tide pools. Very interesting.

Listen, don't pay for these caves. Look for the small sign on the road right before the large colored sign with the Fences. There is going to be an opening in the jungle; walk through there and you will see the beach and two coral arches - one on the right and one on the left. Walk left and you will come around to where the caves are. If you pay, you will feel really silly. Also, just a heads up, I found this to be a bigger problem for people who are scared of heights than people who are scared of small spaces. I saw old people and little kids crushing it, but I am scared of heights and just couldn't do it.

Great scenery, beautiful view. Definitely need to wear either hiking shoes or comfortable shoes to go through tough terrain. You can park on atreet and walk through beach to there, or pay $10 a person and walk shorter distance.

Defintely worth going but would suggest having good hiking shoes. Also, don't need to pay, when you see the VIP sign for parking, know that you need to backtrack and find the official entrance to the park which is free and has a tiny sign. We missed it but after we drove past the VIP parking where they charge $10pp, we found a spot on the road on the left where we could park for free. Some guy was yelling at us in Spanish as we were walking on the beach to get to the cave probably telling us we had to pay but we just ignored him, we were not trespassing on his land because the beach is public. I saw the 2 cave entrances that many described but could not see a safe way down. So I hiked back up before the step heading down and saw a opening to the right where I made my way down. There was a bees nest there and I did get stung twice but it was so worth it to get down to the cave.

No le des dinero a los ladrones en la entrada. ¡Son estafadores que se aprovechan de la ignorancia de los turistas de que esta área es un lugar público!

This was my favorite part of my trip to Puerto Rico. I didn't need to pay for a guide or any 'fee' just drive past the touristy spot to a sign and roadside parking. Walk down the beach, toward some big rocks. From there you have to use your since of adventure/intuition to find the caves. (We walked toward the people who paid lol) The rock walk was a bit dicy, but not enough to turn back or give up- do wear shoes, or if your not coordinated pay the $10 per person, they get a real trail. You can see the water splashing on cliffs and and sit in a natural amphitheater. Below you will be a cave where the petroglyphs are. To get inside, climb out of the pit area back on top of the rocks and head back toward the beach a bit. You'll see a crack that you can climb down. There is also a 'chimney' climb down to the cave through a small hole in the wall that is supposed to be easy. I saw kids climbing out of it. I will attach a picture of the entrance.

How much time would be recommended to see this site? Is 1 hour enough? Thanks!

You can climb into the cave and go down to the cave's mouth where the ocean crashes into the cave. The views are amazing. But I think 2 hours on site is certainly adequate.
We were wanting to stop by this site after our cueva ventana tour but it would be later in the day (approx 4:30pm) when we'd get there. If we stay past 5 will we be able to get our car out of the lot? Or do you have to leave by 5 pm? Thanks!

Is the ladder removed permanently or is it back in? Can we still see the ancient carvings if the ladder isn’t there anymore?

We were told the ladder is permanently gone, if you’re not afraid of small spaces you can climb down into the caves & see the petroglyphs. It’s pretty neat!

Can you all report the location as being incorrect? TripAdvisor shows it on the wrong side of Puerto Rico.

It's true there are some rite that indicates cueva del indio en Humacao and it's correct place is Arecibo. I hope TripAdvisor could read this and correct this big mistake.
Can you swim if you enter through the beach side?

Looked impossible. We drove over and went to beach side, the water was insanely rough.

Can you see petroglyphs since the hurricane? Can you safely get into the cave via ladder? Some reviews say yes and some no.

So, let me understand. The parking opens at 8am but it's open all day to the public for free access? What happens if you arrive before 8am?
Also, children are free is what I read? What ages?

Its for the parking not the sight...the owners that own the land between there and the sight charge you to use it..if you park elsewhere theres no charge...

Visiting again in January, can I bring my own ladder? I’ve been in the caves several times before.

I would say NO. The ladder that was there was damaged by the hurricane so I dont think you can climb inside the cave itself.
