There are countless day hikes in and around what I would call the base area and foothills of the Tetons. They are stunning. But the Tetons ARE within the park so it is certainly possible to hike the Tetons themselves, albeit with probably full gear and plans for an overnight stay. I’d highly recommend staying on the WY side as it can be a haul coming in from ID, and weather in the pass can be unpredictable.

The area is magical. I don’t think you could make a mistake with either location. Jackson and the Snow King is an in town location. Teton village is about 20 minutes out of town and more remote ! Enjoy your time there.

Grand Teton is small compared to Yellowstone and is an easy drive from Jackson. There are plenty of places to stay in Jackson if you like but I found it more convenient for taking sunrise and sunset photos when staying in the park. I'll add, if the price between rooms compare I'd choose the lodging in the park. Have a great trip, dave

We were there 2 weeks ago & it was very hazy. My son that has asthma, had issues while we were hiking, but for the rest of us, it just made our eyes burn & throats a little sore because of all the hiking we did.

Of the 2.5 million visitors of the Grand Tetons NP, with 1/2 hiking the trails, only 6 people are reported as bear attacks with zero fatalities. Bear encounters may be a different lessor category. I’ve been in 6 times without incident. Are you familiar with what is recommended to do if encountered by a bear? With Cubs can be the most dangerous.

The best way I can put it when I plan my routes is time and distance. I’ve done both of these routes. 1) Head north east towards Spokane, then north Yellowstone to Rapid City, then to final destination about 24 hours total driving hours. 2) Head south east towards Boise then south Yellowstone to Rapid City, then to final destination about 21 hours driving time. Route 2) offers you Jackson Hole then Grand Teton NP not far away. You can then head east at the Jackson Lake junction towards Casper traveling through the Wind River area. Either route offers great opportunity to visit many points of interest.

Morning Fellow Traveler. If your just passing through from Casper the shortest 4.25 hour route is through Shoshone then the Wind River Reservation to Bridger-Teton National Forest heading due East. I like that terrain and the crossing of the Snake River not far from Grand Teton NP at Jackson Lake, Colter Bay area. I’ve visited that area a few times now and the scenery is diversified and beautiful. Something for everyone. Stop at the small dam crossing the Snake River if you have time. Jackson Lake is beautiful.
