Avoid this port- extra charges and unsafe conditions. Not for families!

Overcrowded, expensive and added charges . This was a stop for our carnival cruise. So stressful. There are multiple ships dumping into this port. The pool is small and they charge you for everything. To get an umbrella- $40. The pool was a joke. So many people in it, you could not get in. AND it is unsafe. That many people in a pool is chemically unsafe. Additionally, lots of weed and booze, over served. Not a place for families that carnival claims to target. Do not book a cruise to this port, or plan to stay in the ship!

Amber Cove was one of the ports of call on our most recent cruise. The cove itself is very scenic, surrounded by hills. The park is two sides. The first is a nice shopping area with a variety of stores and a few restaurants. The other side is a large pool with a swim up bar and a few waterslides. (There is also a zipline over the pool, which we didn't try.)

We went shopping when we first arrived, the spent the rest of our time in port hanging out in the pool. It was a relaxing way to spend the day.

How to get affordable transportation

First of all I want to say I should have done more planning before leaving the United States.
My husband and I went on a Carnival Cruise from Miami to Aruba (AMAZING!!), Caracau, LaRomana, Dominican Republic and Amber Cove, Dominican Republic September 2-10th, 2023.
We rented a car on the 1st two ports as soon as we got off the ship. It was very easy and close to the Cruise ship (short walking distance). Cost under $100 for all day.
I didn't know that Carnival owned the 2 Islands on our Dominican Republic stop. But quickly found out you were basically contained to purchase only things from them...so sad!!
However, we decided to be a bit adventurous at Amber Cove and made a short walk out the gates onto the local .ain road which seemed like a small interstate. There were MANY VERY NICE drivers with vehicles to accommodate families. The gentleman that gently approached us had a brand new diesel Kia mini van and said he would take us on a tour of the island and stop at places and wait for us ALL DAY til we had to be back at Port by 4pm for only $50.
This man spoke PERFECT English and was super knowledgeable and respectful ♡
I will definitely call on him again if we come back!!
Please don't hesitate to be adventurous and go out on your own to find the best deal for you and your family.
Our driver made us feel safe and valued.

It's just a Cruise port

Amber Cove itself is just a cruise port. Albeit nicer than the other two we went on. But don't expect much but a lot of people trying to get you to go with them on tours. We had prearranged one and they were Fabulous. So glad we didn't wait until we got there.

Went here on Carnival cruise. Visited Ocean World, it was amazing!! Nice area, friendly people there.

FUN AT A PRICE

Extremely Americanised, man made by Carnival cruise line sunshine resort but almost everything comes at a significant cost. Sun beds are abundant and free but it stops there, $8 dollars for Wi-fi and $28 for using the zip wire for example. All in all it's a nicely set out resort with fabulous pool areas and several retail therapy outlets but, in reality, it's far too artificial, manic and noisey for me personally.

Nice lazy river. Reasind the reviews the site and reviews the water slide was was free. Now that want to charge $5.00 per person to ride. Every other time we had visited you only had to pay for zip line. Now I even had to pay for an umbrella att chairs. Not happy

Lots to do but nicer to explore further afield

Docked at amber cove where there are shops, bars and swimming pool. However be brave and take a taxi to a local beach rather than spending your day a short walk from the ship, so much more interesting and enjoyable.

Terrible. A money making commercial mess of a destination. Swimming pool to shallow. Over crowded. Drinks and food and shopping low quality high cost. Not enough shade unless you pay. Cruise ships should be ashamed of themselves bringing people here. They discourage you from getting out of the prison camp like security and going to the beach. So we didnt. Just got back onto the boat.
