A cute drive up Fern Gully as we had rented a car. Right at the top there's a view point with a bar, which we accidentally across. Beautiful views of lush greens. Be careful of you do step out though, it's a prime spot to be motten by mosquitos. We drove back through it to get to the main town but it was just as lovely and mesmerising.

Fern Gully is a beautiful, rain-foresty drive. It is about 3 miles, but with so many windey turns, it takes 10-15 min to get through. (very narrow turns) The problem is... you get through it, then have to turn around and go BACK through it to get back to the city. So you see it TWICE! Perhaps our driver didn't know a different route and there is one?? But we saw it all twice. It is pretty... but not amazing. If you get carsick, skip this one. But it is a free thing to see in Jamaica!

I was excited to see this area, as I loved the movie Fern Gully. The natural landscape and variety of plants etc was incredible! There's not a lot of "touristy" things to do, but it's a beautiful drive!

For me personally, i often get road sick when driving through here because of the MANY turns in the road, so travel with a pill or drink to ease the stomach bug. Nice green scenery though.

This is a must do / see as it’s not far from Ocho Rios.
We had our own car and continued on up to Nine Miles - home of Bob Marley - an amazing crazy drive through Jamaican countryside. Lots of winding roads and pot holes.

WE were very lucky on this day, Nice weather, Not much traffic, So we were able to drive up the Gully at a very leisurely pace.
As a man made road,,,It's great. But to be fair we had been on 100's of Kilometers of great to look at roads in Jamaica, Around cockpit Country, The Blue Mountains etc.
Plus its great to cycle through

We drove through Fern Gully which was magical, Our knowledgeable Jamaican driver told us that years ago one needed headlights on as it was so dark and
completely encompassed by this huge canopy of towering trees. However . Hurricane Gilbert blew the tops off allowing shafts of light to penetrate, The vast roots were so historic that we wanted to stop and explore but the road has few places to pull over, so traffic kept us moving. Ok. I am not a fan of toll roads. Junction has been closed to make it better. So I have been driving through fern gulley. Lovely. But take care as roads are narrow and some local taxis and buses treat it as a racecourse.
However, it is still very worth the drive through it.

It was great to drove thru Fern Gully . The formation of the plants were breathtaking . I would recommend leaving your car window down to take in the fresh air.

Is it possible to engage a botanist who can WALK us through Fern Gully, pointing out species and facts about them? Hubby and I are Master Gardeners and are looking to learn.

I don't think that "walking" through Fern Gully is too feasible, as it is one of the main roads that locals traverse to get from Ocho Rios to Spanish Town and other locations along the way. Traveling through Fern Gully can be a hair raising experience becuase of the narrow road; and most traverse via vehicle. Walking is not recommended.
You may be able to find a few side spots to stop and explore the vegetation and plants, but not too many.
The way the vehicles speed through can be pretty unnerving for the faint of heart.
Nevertheless, with all of that being said, I am sure that if you engage a local along the way upon the road, you may find someone that can share some information on the vegetation that is found along Fern Gully.

We will are going on a Caribbean cruise tomorrow and will be in Ocho Rios. Would like to book a non touristy tours like this one.

Have good time in Ocho Rios! The round trip to Fren Gully will last about 20 minutes. A stop to look at local art( that is, if anyone is exhibiting) might add a few minutes. It is beautiful, but a very short tour. You might like to travel toward Montego Bay a few miles and visit the Seville Great House with quality museum exhibits. A few miles further is the Rose Hall Mansion where the story of the white witch is told.
