“Lots of Features of Historical Interest if you Know Where to Look”

Lots of Features of Historical Interest if you Know Where to Look

I went there for an historical association meeting. A tour guide gave us a quick tour around the outside of the building afterwards. Some very interesting, historical features if you know where to look.

My twin brother Stephen and I had just walked around the wonderful Roman walls ,we descended down Bootham Bar and onto Exhibition Square and admired the great architecture here,one of the most historic sites is King's Manor.
These are a set of medieval dwellings that still survive ,nowadays part of the Department of Archaeology complete with lecture rooms,common rooms,library,computer sites,laboratories ,it's just a very impressive building .
It was originally used as a shelter for the abbots of St Mary's Abbey ,these buildings are historically important and most certainly well worth seeking out if you're in the area and easy to locate on Exhibition Square.

Lovely building

King's Manor is a lovely building but wasn't open at the time I visited early in the morning. It was originally the Abbots House. It served as a seat of government for the Tudors and Stuart.

On a cold and rainy Saturday evening my twin brother Stephen and I chanced upon this set of buildings and what a great find.
The King's Manor are a set of Medieval dwellings now part of the Department Of Archaeology with lecture rooms,seminar rooms,computer suites,laboratories and a dark room plus a library, a common room and a refectory ,its most definitely a very impressive complex of buildings.
Its original use as a shelter for the abbots of St Mary's since 1270 ,you can view St Mary's Abbey at the rear of The King's Manor and also The Yorkshire Museum.
It's a wonderful building and most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area and easy to locate on Exhibition Square.

Take a peek, it is worth it

Rightly described as a 'hidden gem' and probably missed by most visitors. Worth a look around, even if one set of modern brick and concrete building are ugly.

A hidden gem adjacent to York Art Gallery

Visited the Refectory cafe inside the Kings Manor complex, it's well signposted.
A great place for coffees and scones at very modest cost.
Highly recommended.

Interesting historical site

We were shown this by our Free Walking Tour guide and later visited it alone. There is an impressive regal coat of arms above the entrance. The refectory was closed, so not much to see inside (and because it is in use by York University).

Interesting Bit of History

The King's Manor, between the York Museum Gardens and York Art Gallery, was originally built to house abbots of St. Mary's Abbey. This impressive building had performed many functions: Seat of the Council of the North; residence of the Governor of York; residence for private tenants, site of the Yorkshire School for the Blind; and, since 1963, part of York University. It is said that Henry VIII, Charles I, and James I stayed in this building. Based solely on its historical significance, it's worth visiting.

If you go on the free volunteer tour it will stop here to show you the coat of arms at the front door posted with an inverted N. The backward N was not discovered until after it was finished. I recommend going in (it is free to enter as part of the University of York) to see an example of a Tudor mansion and a place where many of England's kings have stayed. Of particular interest in the library which will allow you to see the exquisite ceiling timber work of one of these houses.

You can eat here

Upstairs is a refectory where you can get a light meal or snack. The signboard is easy to miss, being inside the grounds rather than outside. Being inside a historic building is a bonus. One strange thing, the sign from the refectory to the toilets leads you through study areas and down some stairs, but actually the toilets are very close to the place where you originally entered.
