Everything was top-notch on our Puglia walking tour arranged by Luciano of Girosole. The walks were all very pleasant and the level was not too hard. Margherita, who gave us our directions and maps at the beginning of the tour in Trani, was very helpful and warned us that Matera was the hardest hike because we had to climb out of the valley at the end of the day, but it actually was not difficult. The GAIA gps tracks were extremely useful and better than the paper directions. Though we used the paper descriptions to look for landmarks, I would not advise anyone to do the walks without using the gps tracks. When used together, it was not a problem to find the route, though with a self-guided tour you have a chance to exercise your brain as well as your legs.
The hotels were all tremendous, especially in Matera--I wish we had an extra day there. The location, view, terrace, and breakfast were wonderful. The cornetti in Trani were the best we had on our trip. We appreciated that the hotels were interesting, charming, and located in the historic centers of the towns. In Martina Franca we were overwhelmed with the generosity of the breakfast provided! We had so much food we did not have to buy lunch or dinner, and just had a picnic dinner in the room.
The wine tasting was a welcome diversion and the presentation and tasting were very informative. We did not expect to have such a nice interlude on our walk.
Lastly, we are sorry we never met Marinella, the representative in Italy. Her daily check-in texts were welcome and useful. We especially appreciated her restaurant recommendations. We tried many of them and they were all excellent.
Girosole is a 1st class company and we appreciated Luciano's organization and responsiveness to our inquiries. He was very easy to work with when we requested some customizations.

Our Tuscany self guided walk was a wonderful experience. The accommodations were very comfortable. They varied from Comfort, Select & First Class (in Bagno Vignoni). All served a hearty breakfast to start our day and the staff were friendly and helpful. We used their local knowledge for restaurants and things to do in the area.
The Gaia App worked well along with the written notes provided.
All the towns were picture perfect and scenery spectacular. Enjoying a glass of wine as the sun set was a perfect way to end another wonderful Tuscan day.
We loved the extra night in the Roman Bath town of Bagno Vignoni where we soaked in the thermal waters before enjoying a fantastic cooking class with Catarina.
The Ercolani underground city wine tour in Montepulciano was very interesting and ended with wine tasting and food sampling which you could purchase in their shop.
All the Girosole representatives were amazing. Luciano, Fabio, Gabriele, Paolo and Marinella provided excellent support, local knowledge and transportation.
Grazie Mille to the Girosole family for making our time in Tuscany memorable!

Dear Luciano,
I hope you are well.
We had such a wonderful time on our Maremma hiking tour! Thank you for ordering the perfect weather for us…. We enjoyed spending time with Roberto and learned so much about the region. He is very knowledgeable and personable and was a joy to spend time with.
Roberto gave us insights into many local/regional customs, history, topography, etc. etc. Alan and I asked a lot of questions! It is clear Roberto really enjoys giving tours and sharing information to help give context for what we experienced day by day.
The tour was a perfect blend of hiking, sightseeing and historical/ cultural learning. I’m so glad that we spent time in the Maremma in May – – I will always remember the fields of red poppies dotting the landscape. The Vie Cave, tufo, and stories of the Etruscans…seeing their tombs, were a revelation.
Both hotels were magnificent. The Alta Roca staff were so welcoming and helpful. The tour you scheduled of their olive oil production and tasting was great – we ordered 12 bottles of olive oil from their orchard to be shipped home. After the informative part of the tour ended, the staff person prepared grilled vegetables on bread drizzled with olive oil — so delicious. The restaurant at Alta Roca is top-notch…again the staff was just lovely. The setting is stupendous!
Roberto selected wonderful restaurants for us to try, so we really got a sense of the local specialties — our meals were amazing.
The Saturnia hotel was also quite something. The breakfasts at both locations were truly a treat. So you selected hotels very fitting for guests who wanted the deluxe option for this tour.
Piero, the gentleman who drove us from Saturnia to Rome was delightful. He gave us such great recommendations for our last day in Italy before returning to the states.
We are looking forward to our next Girosole trip! Thank you and all the staff in Italy for arranging experiences that exceeded our expectations.
Ciao,
Jeanne

This was my and my husband's 3rd walking self-guided walking tour with Girosole. The most recent trip in Chianti was if anything more wonderful than the other two trips. The walks had beautiful views of hills with vineyards, olive trees, cedars, poppies and and ancient hilltop towns. The light was amazing at certain times of day, especially in the early evening. The places Girosole selected for us were pleasant, and some had unique features (a Decameron theme, a hotel cat, a restaurant where they served wines produced on the premises, etc). We occasionally contacted members of the Girosole team with questions, and they were always knowledgeable, helpful and pleasant to deal with.

We did two tours with a couple of days in between: the Amalfi Coast and then Cinque Terre. From city/town walks to hiking trails, we felt well guided and cared for. It was such a relief to be with the respective guides who knew the language, the area, history, and even flora and fauna. When a ferry was canceled, we took the train - thanks to our guides we were completely carefree. They always had a 'plan B' if needed, and arranged hiking/walking experiences that felt safe and just right for us. The cooking experiences were delightful.
Accomodations were amazing, and Luciano regularly checked in to make sure all was going well. Will definitely return for a Tuscany and Umbria experience!

This was a fantastic trip. All the hikes were beautiful and the towns were amazing. (We also had 7 perfect days of weather-thanks for arranging that.) We were able to visit Syracuse our first day which was a bonus. Francesco was great- always on time and very friendly and knowledgeable. He also gave us a bag of the best oranges we have ever had! Fabio, our guide on Etna, could not have been better. He shared a lot of information and also picked a perfect hike for our group. The hotels in Castlegrande and Castleloma were outstanding as was IL Borgio. On our day off at Il Borgio we went to the Alcantra gorge then went to Naxos. That is an extra day I would strongly recommend for anyone with an extra day to spare-to be that close to the gorge and not see it would be unfortunate. We also met a wonderful caretaker along the top of the valley who shared with us his incredible views and picked us oranges from his orchard; how kind and thoughtful he was. I would also recommend the opera arias program in Taromina-it was a great way to end the trip. The food and the people of Sicily were also incredible and will be missed! Thanks to you, Francesco and Fabio for helping us have an outstanding family vacation.
Sincerely,
David, Joanne, Sara, Emma & Maria Magavern, & Matt, Peter

This was the most amazing tour of the Amalfi coast. Every detail was impeccably taken care of. Luciano listened to all of our requests and responded with exactly what we needed and wanted. Giovanni and Floriana were fantastic tour guides. When something we had planned did not work out they came up with excellent Plan B’s.
Communication throughout was outstanding. The cooking experiences were delicious and so much fun. The hotels had the most magnificent views and amazing breakfasts.
This was a custom made tour that was beyond our expectations and we can’t wait to explore another part of Italy with them.

The Tuscany Walking and Cooking tour was beyond our expectations ….we could not have asked for anymore. Luciano's organization and team took excellent care of us in every respect from the moment of landing to our departure Our guide, Rudy, was excellent. He was very accommodating, knowledgeable and caring. The 9days and 8 nights in 2 separate accommodation sites were an excellent lesson in Italian history, customs and food. The walks were breathtaking and just long enough. One never tired of the vistas. Oh yes …the food and wine..superb.
The cooking classes were also excellent...so much thought and hard work went into memorable experiences.
Our wonderful memories are in the hundreds of stunning pictures taken....thank you Luciano and Rudy.

We just came back from a self-guided walk of the Tuscany hill towns that was a dream come true. The routes we took were interesting and varied, the pace was perfect, and the support material and navigation aids were flawless. Most importantly, the level of service with Girosole was outstanding, from the first contact to the last wave goodbye. Luciano in the Denver office is knowledgable and helpful and can guide you through the process to make sure you get exactly what you want. For example we had one hotel chosen for us that didn't please us. That was changed immediately, no questions asked. Once in Italy we were picked up by Gabriele in Siena and transported to Montelcino, where we sat down together on our beautiful hotel terrace, cappuccinos in hand, to go over the agenda and make sure we were comfortable with the GPX files and the Gaia app, as well as the very-well-organized written navigational instructions. Once hiking, Gabriele checked in with us to make sure everything was going well. We chose to transfer with the baggage instead of hiking one day due to bad weather and this was easy-peasy to arrange. We upgraded one level - from comfort to select - for accommodations and our accommodations were outstanding. They were mostly in historic villas that were stunning, well-situated and staffed with people who were helpful, patient, and fluent in English. Breakfasts were plentiful and good always with some protein options. We were two senior women travelling together (a couple) and we felt comfortable and safe wherever we went. At the end of our trip we ran into a crisis when, while waiting at the train station to catch the train to Rome for our flight out the next morning, all the trains to Rome were suddenly cancelled. Girosole (thank you a million times Gabriele) came to our rescue and organized transport for us to Rome (at our expense of course - get travel interruption/cancellation insurance!) which was totally above and beyond the call of duty. Great company to work with and fabulous hiking in the Tuscan hills. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

The Girosole trip was wonderful! We really enjoyed it. The hotels were great and all the transfers went smoothly. Our local contact person was very helpful and the drivers were super nice and always on time. The hiking was lovely. The weather - perfect.
It was lovely to spend time in the smaller medieval towns in Tuscany vs. dealing with the crowds in Florence.
We hope to do another Girosole trip in a few years.

Has anyone taken a Girosole walking tour of Eastern Sicily? Interested in any feedback. Thanks,
投稿日:2022年3月4日
We did Amalfi and it was amazing. The Walk of the Gods is awesome. I want to do Sicily. They will customize to what ever walking/hiking level you want. Our local guide was fantastic with Girosole. We will definitely use them again.

My husband and I would like to book the hiking tour in the Garfagnana and Apuan Alp with Girosole. I haven't seen any reviews on this hike specifically. Is someone able to give me feedback regarding meals/lunches-do the guides provide lunch, or are there stops? How are the accommodations?
投稿日:2019年4月6日
You will need to pack snacks for most hikes but the guide will let you know if there is a lunch included or if you will pass through villages to buy food. We stopped for rests along the trail as needed. Ask about potty stops. It’s usually behind a bush! Not having done this hike I can’t advise you about meals, exactly, but Girosole is AWESOME. In the two previous hikes with them we chose the level of hotels. The first trip I picked basic the next comfort and did not have a complaint with either. Of course the European showers seem much smaller than US ones!! Ask questions. They will help you make decisions and give advice. I recommend Youtube videos and Trip Advisor to review the trails so you have a better idea about the terrain, etc.
have a blast!

It seems as though all the reviews are for the self guided tours - I would love to hear from anyone who did the guided tour of Tuscany.
Thank You,

While we were on our self-guided walking tour, we ended at the same cafe as another couple who were on the guided tour. They were loving every minute of it, as they could customize as they went. Hope this helps.

Hello - My husband and I have never been to Italy. We were looking at the Tuscany Guided Walk. How were the accommodations? We are thinking September or October - just wondering how the weather and crowds maybe that time of year. How much hiking/walking did you do per day. We are 60 years - very fit - love the outdoors. We would like to see Rome and Florence while we are in Italy - would you suggest we do that prior to the Girosole Walking Tour. Can you give me an idea of the places yiu visited and your favorite.
Thank you for taking the time.

I did Girosole's self guided Tuscany walk with 6 other women, all between 60-70 with 3 of us celebrating our 65th years! All was very good- great reliable support staff, fine hotels in the middle range with suites a few times and never a problem with accomodations. I Suggest trekking poles - really makes the dowhills easier and safer. One each was fine for us. Some paths had loose gravel or were very uneven. We loved the entire experience - just understand you will walk for hours with no restrooms or villages. There will be areas of privacy in bushes or trees and pick up bread, cheese, fruit, candy, and plenty of water to pack each day. Ciao. Charlotte

Hi,
I've never been to Italy and would like to do one of the self guided hikes with Girosole, but I can't decide which one! Originally, I thought Tuscany hike, but now I'm leaning more towards the Amalfi Coast. I do think I'd like to be close to water which is why I'm changing my tune and leaning more towards the coast...I'm not sure the Tuscany hike includes walking near any water? I'm 28 and fairly physically fit. I may be doing this trip on my own as well so safety is also a concern. Does anyone have any recommendations for which self guided hiking trip I should go for? Thanks!
投稿日:2015年3月1日
The Tuscany self guided tour does not go near any sizeable water. Call Luciano, owner whose number is the one on website and i expect he will answer your questions as patiently and thoroughly as he did mine.
投稿日:2015年4月1日
Has anyone taken a walking tour in the Dolomites with Girosole? I went over the first few pages of recent reviews, and all of them are for walks in Tuscany and elsewhere. I am interested in what your experiences are in the Dolomites. Thanks for your help.
投稿日:2015年2月28日
I agree with the above. Did the Tuscany hike and they were superb.
I have hiked in the Dolomites with a couple of friends, though. Have been all over, but the Dolomites have the most breathtaking scenery anywhere! My advice - Go!

A friend and I plan on doing the "Walking or Hiking the Italian Lakes District" this coming september. We may extend our vacaiton and stay a little longer. I would like to hear from people who have taken the trip, especially in the fall. We would need help with a Milan hotel and transport from the airport. Then suggesitons about staying in the Lakes area a few extra days, flying back out of Milan to the USA.
投稿日:2015年2月7日
Hi Kathleen - i loved your review of the tour. We are thinking of going next September and using Girosole. can you suggest any other helpful hints .. what was the weather like - how long were the day hikes in kilometres, how were the hotels ?
Finally - we intend to stay on after our walking tour - is southern italy great to tour - where we should go ? wed like some down time as well - swimming in the clear seas , pool etc
投稿日:2015年1月1日
Buono Sera! I read the answers posted by others and I would agree with what they said, especially MimiaandPT. It looks like they did the same hike as us. We went in early October and it was warm - warmer than normal there but pleasant, not hot. I posted reviews on Girasole and all of the hotels we stayed at. You may want to look at those. Again, we concur with MimiaandPT their favorite was our favorite in Montalcino and same for their/our least favorite, the one in Montepulciano. My tips are: be in pretty good shape if you do the "hike" (versus walk), pack right (see Girasole's list), wear hiking shoes for sure and think about poles. The Girasole people are great - ask them anything. Best vacation ever.
