Great Backpacking!

My husband and I have backpacked here 2 years in a row; it is so majestic and surreal. We started at Onion Valley, there you must cross over Kearsarge Pass to get into the back country. From there we did Glen Pass to the Rae Lakes. Absolutely beautiful!! I am a beginner backpacker and was able to do it just fine. I highly recommend the trip!

I drove out of Death Valley and came to a place called Lone Pine and was immediately struck by the magnificent snow capped peaks rising from the sedimentary basin. As you child growing up through the golden years of television, I remembered the black & white movies about wagon trains and the early settlers being stopped in their tracks by this natural barrier. It was all just storybook stuff then, but suddenly the reality hit me and I understood. I asked a waitress from Lone Pine if mountaineers in this day and age try and cross the Sierra Nevada from here, and she replied, no, nobody can cross these mountains. From Lone Pine you can head into the Alabama Hills and see where they made all those old Westerns, ie: Lone Ranger etc etc.

Att besöka nationalparkerna i Kalifornien är något extra. Vyerna är fantastiska och parkerna lagom tillrättalagda för bekvämt friluftsliv. Här slipper man trängsel, allt för varmt och dålig luft. Vi besökta såväl Kings Canyon och Sequa National Park som Yosemite. Missa inte Trioga pass över till de östra delarna. Vägarna upp till Lake Thao är fantastiskt fina i Vilda Västern stil.

Die Serra Nevada hat mit dem Mount Whitney den höchsten Berg der USA ausserhab Alaskas vorzuweisen. An seiner Ostseite ist die Landschaft eher wüstenhaft bzw. hochalpin, wie um Lake Tahoe. Auf der Westseite kommt man vom Central Valley stufenartig bis zum Hauptkamm, hat mit Yosemite Valley und dem Sequoia National Park zwei der wichtigsten Naturlandschaften Kaliforniens zum Besuch angeboten. Jeder Kalifornienreise wird diesen Gebirgszug wahrscheinlich durchkreuzen und sich an seiner majestätischen Pracht erfreuen. Schnee findet man hier bis in den Juni hinein.
