I carried a small backpack with no problems. There was no security that I noticed for the interior portion of the garden. The exterior part is open to the public and shouldn't have any restrictions.

It's not really a kids attraction. It hardly qualifies as a national botanical garden being so small compared to other countries. Should be named D.C. city garden.

No, you cannot, but frankly you wouldn't want to. A slow contemplative perambulation is the best way to see what is there.

There are many tours — Conservatory overview tours are offered multiple times a day on most days and specialized tours on specific topics (like medicinal plants) or specific rooms/gardens (like the Tropics House or the Rose Garden) are offered periodically. You can find a full schedule of all tours, workshops, lectures, and other programs at USBG.gov/Programs or inquire at the front information desk.
