We stumbled across this while walking the grounds of the Museum of Ethnology. It only cost about $4usd for a half hour show. It was all in Vietnamese, but fun to watch and would be a good activity for kids.

We opted to see the water puppet show at the Ethnology Museum instead of the more conventional show in the city centre near Hoan Kiem Lake. Pricing is similar, but it was just more convenient to be able to combine this with a visit to the museum. The show lasted about 30 mins and was more interesting than expected. The kids enjoyed it also.

Several short performances - shot scenes/sketches depicting day to day rural life as well as celebration rituals. Skilled puppeteers, talented singers and musicians. It takes 30 minutes and is a kind of greatest hits compilation. Probably horribly touristy - but perfect for a group of mildly interested foreigners with a seven year old in tow.

Longlink Water Puppet show is interesting because each 3 months they change to a new group of puppeteers to perform, so though you have watched the show there before, you can come and watch again after next 3 months and experience something new.
They do this also to give chance to preserve all puppeteers groups. Sometimes it would blow your mind about how can the puppeteers do certain things with the puppets. There are some techniques that you may not be able to figure out.
Though you may not understand the content but it will give you an interesting experience. And the puppet theatre is outdoor.
Also, I would like to give credit to Ms. Oanh who had helped us a lot with filming there.

Если сравнивать с самым известным театром кукол (который около Озера Возвращённого меча), то здесь много плюсов: 1) легко купить билет и почти сразу посмотреть шоу 2) на свежем воздухе 3) программа достаточно короткая, но достаточная, чтобы познакомиться с культурой.
Превосходно подойдёт семьям с детьми - не успеют заскучать, тк все равно все по-вьетнамски, хотя девушка объявляет сценки на английском (возьмите на входе буклет, там практически то же самое написано).
4) главное преимущество - после шоу можно (и нужно!) подойти попросить поучиться управлять куклами, для этого есть специальный небольшой бассейн. Почему-то многие уходят, не попробовав, а жаль! Отличные впечатления
И конечно чрезвычайно приветливые сотрудники.
Очень рекомендую!

If you want to see live traditional music and an entertaining traditional 1h show you have to go :)
Is a new and original way to get a know part of their culture :)
I totally recommend :) Perfect on quality/price :)

Saw the Water Puppets at the Ethnology Centre in Hanoi. Was very helpful entertaining to watch. Music & singing was very good. Really enjoyed the 30min show, thou

We came here yesterday and it was full of people. However, the space is quite big so we still have some seats to watch the show. Very interesting performance!
But that is not what I am impressed the most. It is just 20k (around 1$) on Sunday - very reasonable in comparison to other water puppet shows in Hanoi.
I heard that groups from ten people or more still get that price every other day, you should check it out!

There are lots of different shows you can see. We saw it at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which is also great to walk round. Not very expensive, can’t remember exactly how much.
