I kept reading about this garden, but I found it very difficult to find specific information about where it was and how to get there, so I thought I'd add something here about it to help others. A search of the web site for the School of Medicine shows nothing for the garden, but it does give the address (at the bottom of the page).
This garden was founded in 1787 by King Charles III of Spain. It has plants from all over Peru, labeled with their Latin and common names (in Spanish), place of origin, and their uses.
It would be a nice introduction to what to look for in your travels around Peru, or if you can't get out of Lima, you can see some of what you're missing here.
It would also be a nice place to spend an hour in a quiet, cool, green spot in the middle of a very busy, slightly chaotic part of the city. It's not that far from a couple of art museums, and the Sheraton.
I took the bus rapid transit line to the Central Station, and got off and walked east along Grau until I came to the school, recognizable by its traditional looking salmon pink buildings on a well-kept, fenced campus. I had to walk to the 3rd entrance, past the main building, to find one that was open, but perhaps that was because it was Saturday and the gates of the main building were closed.
The grounds of the campus are better tended than the botanical garden, which looks somewhat neglected. The paths are unswept, littered with seed pods and dead leaves, and particularly in the area with the cactuses, dead branches are simply left, detracting from the beauty of the plants.
Balancing that, there are a couple of large pergolas, perfect for young lovers or picnic lunches, and there really is a large variety of plants. There are benches scattered throughout.
