If you are looking to do something impacting and well worth your time, then I recommend this place. I thoroughly enjoyed having an English conversation with a local guy currently studying at college and looking to improve his English.

BBM started out publishing Laos books and offering tutoring to local Laos people. They still do both and you can help local folks practice their English twice a day in the am and early evening. Bit BBM is also building and overseeing new schools so you can spend a day tutoring pre-school to high school students. It is an amazing experience to be in a local community and share in the excitement of learning. If you’re in town & want to do more than just the ordinary tourist activities, spend some time at BBM. You won’t regret it.

I am so impressed - both with the organisation that had this wonderful idea and made it happen, and with the students who turn up every evening to practise their English.
I was introduced to 4 students (with ages ranging from 15-19) and it was such a pleasure to spend time talking with them. We talked about their families, job aspirations, travel etc. and it was as interesting for me to learn more about the Laotian way of life, as I hope it was for the students practising their English.

Visiting Big Brother Mouse should be on everyone’s to do list and if you have time ( which I highly suggest you make time) it is an enriching experience . Try to go at a time when you can participate and volunteer to speak English with one of the eager young people who are so enthusiastic. I always gain more than I give and learn so much. What an amazing organization . The experience will be with you forever.

We stopped in here for an hour and a half or so one night and got talking with young locals eager to practise their English. I'd like to think it was an interesting and helpful experience for them, but it would have helped if the three youngsters directed to sit with me were of at least a similar language level - in the end, one of them dominated and the other two just looked quite lost. But it's a great idea and I wish them every success.

I had researched and read some reviews before coming to Luang Prabang, and me being an English Teacher in Thailand, this just seemed like the kind of thing I may like doing for a short bit.
I went in the evening after a sunset cruise, and had just about 20 minutes before they closed for the day. With my time, I got to chat with a university student and we got to exchange ideas and thoughts about life, dreams, travel, sports, and hobbies. It was lots of fun!
In conclusion, like others have already said in their reviews, I'd invite anyone who is visiting LP, please stop by (even for a little bit like I did), or you can stay for an hour, hour and a half, or more, and have the fun experience of conversing with someone from another culture.
You can learn so much and may even have alot in common with the individual or individuals who you get to converse with.

We spend two hours discussing with kids, learning about their daily life while assisting them in learning English. In the end, I'm positive we learned more than they did!

When we travel, our favorite thing to do is hang out with locals. This was an incredible day of hanging out with the beautiful children of Laos. We chose the all day option to go to the big school and work with the children. We started at 9 am and finished at 330. We worked with preschool kids to teachers in training practicing the English they have already learned. It was so much fun! Singing, dancing and reading. Lunch is provided for a small donation ( the donation is not mandatory)
We enjoyed ourselves so much and the kids are awesome! It's a wonderful school with happy learning children. We would do it again in a heartbeat.

Yes you need to visit if you speak English. Every evening young people come who want to practice speaking English with you. Also available are a wide variety of books in Lao and English. We picked up a couple of coloring books for our grandsons including both languages.

Any hostel or guest house in the historic old quarter of Luang Prabang is nearby to Big Brother Mouse, no more than a 15-minute walk and in many cases less. The Big Brother Mouse program is located near the end of the peninsula, near Wat Sene. City Backpackers is perhaps the closest? There is a hostel near Utopia Bar that is close -- Y Not Laos Hostel. Tony Central Hostel. Just look at a map of hostels in the area and pick something that is on the peninsula (which if small and easy to walk, with minimal traffic). LPQ Backpackers is a little further but still definitely easy walking distance.
Note that you can also often get a guesthouse private room in Laos as low as $10-12 as well, just towards the end of the historic district or a little outside of it.
