I didn't see an Apple store but we didn't go to all the stores in the mall

It's about an hour from Tokyo but it depends where in Tokyo your friend lives. There is a bus stop across the Keisei Narita train station that takes you to the mall for a small fee. It's a large mall so you'll have a lot to do. Alternatively, if it's during the day you can walk to Naritasan Omotesando Street from the train station where they have old shops selling rice crackers, grilled eel, and Japanese desserts. At the end of the street is a large temple complex food vendors, and a nature park. Alternatively as others suggested, if you go to Tokyo you can catch the Narita Express (NEX) or Skyliner for certain stations directly to Narita Airport. Also, Narita Airport has a lot of shops and restaurants like a mini mall. But if your layover is that long see Narita it doesn't take long.

旧メルキュールホテルですね。 宿泊した事が無いので詳しくは無いのですが、ホテルーイオンモールの無料バスは止まりませんでした。 空港や成田駅から２００円程度で乗ることのできるバスがあるようです。

There are lots of restaurants and men's wear at this mall. There's a discount for foreign travelers. You just have to go the tax discount counter at the second floor. The grocery is fantastic. You may see stuff that is not in other countries. Well I did. All in all good enough for a few hours of leisure shopping and eating.
