Amazing experience, highly recommend!
Five of us ranging from teenagers to a pensioner thoroughly enjoyed our tea ceremony, which included wearing a kimono and making origami.
We also did the sushi making, which included a trip to the market to buy some of the ingredients. All of us are vegetarian and they took this into consideration, so not to include any fish in the sauce, etc. We made miso soup, two different types of sushi and some Japanese spinach. After making it we were lead to a different room to enjoy our delicious creations as well as matcha tea and ice cream for dessert.
The ladies of WAK are so lovely and friendly. We were made to feel very welcome. I would recommend WAK to anyone wishing to have an authentic Japanese experience.

Our private session was expertly run by our hostess, who supervised ensuring we were properly tied into our kimonos; it’s very complex! The history is fascinating, and the nuance of the movements during the tea ceremony reveals why it takes years to master. The time flies by, and despite my miserable attempts at origami later, this was a thoroughly worthwhile and absorbing activity.

Great fun dressing in kimonos for the tea ceremony and origami. It was super busy so did feel we were rushed in and on schedule to get us out but we loved it. The ladies were super friendly and a lovely setting. We enjoyed the entire afternoon and highly recommended.

Really enjoyed our visit and learned a lot about wearing the kimono and taking part in the tea ceremony. Would recommend this experience.

Great insight into the history and tradition of the tea ceremony. Yuki’s English was excellent and she was very patient with answering our questions.

Mieko-san was a great teacher, and she did a great job explaining (in English) how to prepare traditional Japanese food in the home. I was especially pleased to learn how to make dashi, which is fundamental to pretty much all Japanese cooking and was way easier than I expected. We had a great time and would recommend to any food lovers traveling in Kyoto!

We had an excellent walking tour round the market and a fabulous cooking experience perhaps the Sake tasting could have been a little more informative, so if you want the focus on looking at food, buying ingredients and cooking them this is for you, overall a great trip

Price was not as advertised. After booking and being initially charged. The company refused to give us the address we required, unless we paid an additional 3500 yen each. Essentially extorted for more. Expensive, cooking class had minimal English, but nice lady. Would avoid.

We're sorry for the inconvenience this time regarding the additional year-end fee, however we remember you agreed with our request and finally charged the additional fee with your consent.
We hope you enjoyed our walk tour with sushi cooking as well as trekking the day before the tour.

My husband and I had a fascinating, highly enjoyable afternoon experiencing some traditional Japanese culture! Our instructor for the session was the lovely Sashiko, who couldn't have been kinder, more friendly or more helpful - we were made to feel like honoured visitors rather than bungling tourists!
The first part of the afternoon was having our kimonos fitted. There was plenty of choice, especially for me - the women's designs were all beautiful and it was quite hard to choose which one to wear! Sashiko took time with both of us to make sure that they were fitted correctly and then also did my hair; again there was a choice of flowers.
Next was a "photo shoot", using the traditional Japanese-style courtyard garden as backdrop. Sashiko took many photos in different poses, of us separately and together, on both camera and phones.
Then came the tea ceremony. First she made us both tea, explaining every stage as she went, and then we had a go at following the ceremony and making tea for each other. More choice here, this time of which cups to use for the other's tea, and Sashiko explained the meanings behind the designs we chose. Fascinating, and the tea (and accompanying sweets) was very good! More photos as well, of course...
Finally, we had a short session on how to make an origami piece, with a choice of three - a crane for me, and a spinning top for my husband. Again we had a choice of papers to use and Sashiko was incredibly patient with us both.
At the end of the afternoon, we were given a small gift to take away, adding to our memories of a truly interesting and captivating time.

When i try to book on the website it asks me for my postcode but it wont let me put in my postcode as it has a pre determined set numbers per postcode but this is longer than my postcode, did anyone else have trouble with this when booking?

Sorry for the late reply -- we booked this last minute so I completed my reservation and payment on the phone while in Kyoto. They were very accommodating, we did a same-day booking for 2 classes in the afternoon.

Hi, I fly into Kansai on Oct. 5th at 2:45pm and have a 10 hr layover. I was looking at perhaps participating in this tea ceremony. What time does it start? Would I be able to do one for an hr around 5?

We had a private tea ceremony organised by WAK but they are based in Kyoto. I am sure you will be able to find one convenient for you. Hope you enjoy yourself. Japan is a fascinating country.
