The historic Butokuden, Hall of Martial Virtues was built in Kyoto near Heian Shrine to carry out the legacy of ancient traditions which was started in eighth century capital of Kyoto. It had remained emblematically the powerful symbol of esteemed honor and highest integrity where the prominent Japanese martial practitioners aspired to be recognized by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai. The Dai Nippon Butoku Kai of today was reestablished again after the World War II with the new philosophical vision of preserving the long-standing illustrious classical martial virtues and traditions and to contribute to the world peace, international goodwill, mutual understanding and respect, and prosperity through Budo education. It aims for the restoration of classical martial cultures, supporting allied research, instruction and service, promotion of international peace and harmony, and the advancement of greater humanity through the education and training of the traditional martial arts disciplines.

This was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. As it happens, I forgot to write a review when I first went, but years later I still think about. The kendo itself was amazing, but what really set it apart was Tomo's review of the history, philosophy and culture. Truly transcendent.

We had a great teacher lecturing us on history of Japan, Bushido and Kendo. And then we "tasted" the kendo wearing a kendo armor, learning the moves, postures and sparing. If you look for a fun time in Kyoto and yet also to learn about Japan and its history, this is a must. Thank you for a beautiful and fulfilling experience!

It was a great intro to history of samurai and way of life before modernization of Japan. Sensei was a great story teller and taught us way of Kendo in patient and forgiving manner (we were just bad). But we had a fun time doing first try at kendo and spar with each other (just bad). Our fav times were phototaking in our suited up armour, haha. Thank you, sensei, for sharing history and life stories.

I loved this experience. The history of samurai and kendo was fascinating and actually one part that made this session. The instruction was at a good pace and there is no holding back, you get the full experience of kendo. It's something I've wanted to do when I was a kid and I'm so glad I did this, especially being in the oldest dojo in the world. Just do it! What's not to like about channelling your inner samurai or Jedi?

This was one of our very favorite things to do in Kyoto. We are trained martial artists with Black Belts in Hapkido but had never studied Kendo before. Tomoyoshi Yamanaka is a wonderful teacher who talked about the history of the samurai, his own personal history and then taught a few basic sword moves. This was followed by short kendo matches. The class was fun, informative and easily accessed by students of all levels. And the setting--in the oldest martial arts center in Japan--was wonderful.

After we accidently went to the office and not the Butokuden, we were running a little late but were warmly welcomed by Tomoyoshi Yamanaka.
The 2 hour class was excellent.
A combination of history lesson, learning about the instructors philosophy, basic striking and blocking and finally finishing with a short contest with an opponent. Time just flew by and I was exhausted but so happy.
Please do not hesitate, book yourself on this experience, you will not regret it at all!

Esperienza meravigliosa consigliata per tutti. Non è solo una prova di un'arte marziale, è anche un piccolo assaggio della cultura alla base del Kendo, dei valori su cui si basa. Il Maestro ha una grande passione per quello che fa e riesce a trasmetterlo egregiamente nella lezione.

We did Kendo with Tomo and it was such a great experience. He was so knowledgeable on the history of kendo and had such a great passion for the sport. His instruction was great and we had such a great time. I would recommend this to anyone traveling to Kyoto.

Hi, I will be going to Kyoto on March 8 and would like to know if you have a short session for kendo or and exibition which we can watch. If you have a session may I know how long would it take and how do we go to your ace?

You can certainly apply even for one person. You will likely to meet some other participants joining on the day. Sometime I only have one student but I still enjoy teaching the class. Please don't hesitate even if you are the only one applying.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I will make my final trip plans by the beginning of April. This Kendo class is at the top of my list right now.
I see that the Butokuden is possibly the same one that I have researched since your video has said it was built in1889. Is this the one on the grounds of the famous Kyoto Budo Center?

If it is, this is very good, as I had planned on visiting the center, just to research the various activities on site as well as it's historical significance.
How have you been able to rent this space? It is so perfect! I hope to map out my few days in Kyoto and wanted to make sure that this was the site of the Kendo instruction.
(Japanese Google and English Google can be hard to navigate sometimes.)

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, Butokuden is within the Kyoto Budo Center property. The Butokuden is now under the administration of Kyoto city. As a citizen of Kyoto city, I can reserve the place for Kendo practice.

Hello, I am interested in this experience. I was wondering if maybe there can be a few more videos and pictures.
I see that you have just started this business in Kyoto. Will the class be taught in the Butokuden in your pictures? I would like to have my husband do this class while I take pictures.This butokuden is beautiful and would look excellent in a social media picture.
Are you considered a dojo? I am not familiar with Kendo, but I am interested in the study of it.
I will be sure to share my review and post pictures to social media and TripAdvisor if we decide to have my husband and his friend do this excellent class.
Do we need to speak Japanese to do this class?

Hello Jessica,
Yes, I just started this class. Butokuden will be the place of workshop. You don't need to be able to understand Japanese. I will do all instruction in English. Appreciate you take pictures and post on SNS. It will let other tourist also know about this activity!
