I had the Bon Dance Workshop with my teacher Yukiko. Before I even arrived, she was waiting for me by the door, a bit concerned for me as there was a massive rainstorm that day, so I could already tell she was a very caring person. When I stepped in, I was surprised at the super chic modern cafe that also housed the very traditional tatami room where I would have my lesson. This workshop was made extra special because I got taught how to wear a beautiful summer kimono (yukata) before learning the dance choreography. It felt so special to dress up and it really set the tone for the rest of the delightful afternoon. And although it takes multiple steps to get dressed, my teacher explained it to me in an easy-to-understand way. Yukiko is very talented, she is a traditional Japanese dancer, actor and model. She taught me how to do the bon dance with her own special choreography inspired by the 2020 Olympics. She walked me through each step of the dance and was patient with me as I learned it. I felt like I had a fully authentic cultural experience with dancing in a traditional-stye Japanese room while wearing a yukata. Her colleague Yumiko San was also there, she shared with me that she taught the koto music classes. It was a delight to talk to her as well and she served us some Japanese tea and traditional sweets afterwards -- mine was an orange jelly served in a real orange peel! This really completed the day for me. Anyone thinking of soaking in some real Japanese culture, don’t hesitate to learn from Yukiko and Yumiko! Highly recommended!

Wow, I had a good experience with playing the Koto a vintage Traditional Japanese musical intruments, you get to know a bit about its history, wear a kimono, and actually perform a song in the end, wow ok I really liked that, it’s easy to learn but the teacher is a master at it, it’s different type of music which I liked so much. It’s definitely worth it considering that even most morden Japanese don’t know how to play it.

I visited Kanade to experience playing Koto in Feb. Yumiko san was a very good teacher. She taught me how to play Koto from basic. It's was easy to understand. Only 20 minutes later I was able to play one of the most famous Japanese song, "Sakura Sakura". When Yumiko san joined with her Koto, it became a beautiful ensemble. That was awesome! I felt like I became a good Koto player. Now a day you can find many plans for various kinds of Japanese cultural experiences, but there are few places which offer a Koto experience. I definitely recommend Kanade to tourists from abroad. Don't worry, Yumiko san speaks good English.

i had such a nice time at the tea ceremony and koto lesson! yumiko-san and her assistant ritsuko were so kind and patient. yumiko-san generously played the koto for us and then explained how. it was very clear and simple to pick up because she was such a good teacher! the mochi and tea she prepared were delicious and i was so grateful to have the opportunity to learn about tea ceremony etiquette. they also took the time to dress me in kimono which was so special! i cherish my memory of this visit! if you are looking for a macro dose of japanese culture delivered gracefully, look no further than kanade!
