This is a traditional tatami shop where you are allowed to have a close look at how Japanese traditional tatami mat is made and make one mini tatami mat for your own. The shop is more than 80 years old and now run by the 2nd and 3rd generations. Their staff - Cheryl from Singapore - speak fluent English (of course!) and also Chinese that makes this experience much more easier to understand and interesting. They made us feel so welcome by waiting and greeting us when we arrived the store and seeing me off after the lession. The explanation was clear but had all the information needed, and they were willing to answer all the questions the participants made. The craftmen even though can't speak English, they were polite and very interesting by keep sharing stories with us. We highly appreaciated the way they try to use simple English within their ability to comunicate. Most of all, we like the way they did small talks with all of us to make sure everyone involve in and enjoy the experience. Cheryl even went so far to share her knowledge of other sightseeing and workshop spots which we really appreciated. Even though the shop is small, this is a very worth-visiting place for those love to dig in Japanese culture and have a special experience.

We had the most fantastic time at the Tatami Mat making experience. Nothing was too much trouble to explain, their communication was excellent, as was their standard of English. It was so good to meet the family who own and run the business and they went to huge lengths to show us exactly how they make the mats, and to ensure we had the most memorable of times. Highly recommend you take time out to get closer and more informed about a key part of Japanese culture. The mini tatami mats we made have pride of place and are a permanent reminder of our wonderful holiday to Japan. Thank you so much!

Me and my partner got a very good introduction on how tatamis are made. They were very friendly and we would strongly recommend their course if you want to learn about tatamis.
They also export tatamis.

I spent a wonderful afternoon, just over 1.5 hours learning about the history and process of making tatami mats in Japan. Mikiko speaks English well and took me through the 'factory' where the mats are made by her husband and father-in-law. It was fascinating and they were all such lovely people too. I got to make a small mat as a souvenier. The whole experience was very satisfying, fun and interesting. I recommend this workshop if you have a free couple of hours in Kyoto.

The Yamada family have been making tatami mats, an essential for classical Japanese living, for generations, and have a business in a quite neighbourhood near Emmachi Station. Mikiko, whose English is quite good, ran a terrific workshop, and was great with communication before arrival, too.
During the workshop I was able to get a good depth of information about the various components of tatami mats, and other relevant concepts. Her father-in-law showed how they used to make the mats before machinery - though they are not exactly highly automated these days either - and you could see the strength and skill needed to cut and sew through thick layers of rice stalks and reed matting.
Mikiko's husband, who looks like a sumo from wrestling these hefty mats around the workshop and installing them all day long, also demonstrated many of the the manufacturing processes, and explained more about the materials through Mikiko's translation.
I then had the opportunity to make a small decorative tatami, which was very satisfying, and also commissioned a custom tatami to use back home for standing meditation. This is my favourite souvenir now that I am back in Australia, and gets used every day.
I recommend making sure you have enough space in your luggage and plan ahead re:size and pick-up (it will take at least a day to make) if you would like your own custom-built tatami for zazen or decorative purposes, letting the Yamadas know as early as possible..
The Yamada family are delightfully friendly people, enthusiastic about their venerable craft of tatami-making, booking a workshop with them is highly recommended.

A memorable visit to Yamada Tatami Workshop when searching for edging to repair some tatami mats I have. The family were extremely helpful and I want to thank them for their kindness, generosity and good humour. Personal encounters like this are what travelling is all about. Highly recommend if you are looking for tatami or want to understand more about this wonderful craft.

As always, it was my wife's idea that we book this workshop while visiting Kyoto. I was sceptic and thought it will be more suitable for young children. It was not! This was a wonderful event and the best out of the 4 workshops we had in Kyoto. The Yamada family (the father, his son, and the son's wife) are kind, pleasant, happy and welcoming people. They showed us how tatami mats are made, showed the machinery at work, Ms. Yamada gave us a lecture about tatami mats, their history, what they are made of, etc. and finally we got to make our own little tatami souvenirs. This was a wonderful experience and we highly recommend it for everyone, at any age.

My husband and I really enjoyed our visit to Yamada Tatami. During the first part of our visit Mikiko taught us about the history of tatami mats and explained what the various components are. Then we had the opportunity to watch Mikiko's husband and father-in-law work in their shop - that day they were refurbishing some older tatami mats and making them look like new. It was great to get a behind the scenes look at how tatami is made!

Then we went to a separate room and made our own mini tatami mats, which are a fun souvenir. Mikiko was very encouraging and a great teacher. Her husband joined us towards the end we really enjoyed having a chance to chat with them...they have a great sense of humor!

Overall, we would highly recommend visiting Yamada Tatami. It was a nice change of pace from seeing temples and being surrounded by tourists. It took us to a quieter part of Kyoto which we wouldn't have been to otherwise, and we got to meet some lovely people.

hello! Nikolai here- I have been in japan for a few months seeing the sights and having a blast. Of the many adventures I've had, the Yamada Tatami mat workshop was one of the coolest activities so far. The Yamada family has run their tatami mat workshop for a few generations and its fairly evident when you see how skillful they are at their work. I learned the history of Tatami mat making, what materials they are made from, and how their techniques have evolved over time- And did i mention the Yamada family are super chill? We had a great time with lots of laughs and tons of great stories (and you get to use a hammer)
Over all I highly recommend visiting their workshop- specially if you love Japanese culture as much as i do- and dont worry, Yamada Miki speaks English incredibly well.
p.s. wear matching socks ahahaha

Mikiko, her husband, and her father-in-law were very gracious hosts. The history lesson and demonstrations were quite interesting and the craft project was perfect for our 11 year old and 13 year old. A highly recommended option in Kyoto.
