First time camping here

This is a great state park. Even in June, there are trees for shade.
The rangers are helpful and friendly.
We stayed in site 30. There was a huge space for tents and running around. This is close to the very clean restrooms and showers.
The lake is very shallow. The swimming area was knee deep. We went to the other side of the peninsula for a deeper area. It is a small lake.
Great park minutes outside of Safford.

Very quiet campground even though it was full. We had the beach to ourselves most of the time. The water is quite low so there is plenty of beach. Super shallow beach area, great for small kids to play. Easy walk from campsite. Nice walking and biking paths around the lake. Great short hike to Mesa
to view sunsets on Mt Graham. Lake great for paddle boarding, kayaks and canoes. Clean showers and restrooms.

I visited late December 2020. Stayed in Coyote Camping Cabin. Weather was great, 60s in the daytime. One day was very windy making it too cold and windy for a fire. Nights in 20s so thank goodness for heating available in the cabin. The cabin and all facilities were amazingly clean. Pit toilets however were a bit stinky, but flush toilets and showers are a short walk from cabins. Cabin beds are not too comfortable. Plastic mattress was clean but very hard for sleeping. I like a firm mattress, but these are beyond firm, really rock hard, but not unexpected though for this type of camping cabin. If you go, your best bet is to rent one of the 3 cabins facing the lake. The views are amazing. All other cabins basically face the pit toilets. Bass cabin has the best view. 2nd choice would be Coyote and 3rd choice would be Hummingbird. If you can’t get a lake view cabin, then probably the best bet would be Bear cabin since it is on the far end, closest to the bathroom with flush toilets/showers. Cabins have heat and AC, covered patio with swing, picnic table, fire pit and grill area with cement counter with outdoor sink and water faucet from sink and below counter ( so 2 water faucets outside). One night was too cold so outdoor water did not work due to frozen faucets ( still not thawed by 0900). There were 3 electrical outlets inside the cabin, but one was blocked by the very large heavy leg of the log bed, so only 2 were usable. No exterior outlets or hookups. Inside there is a large counter area with a couple of shelves above for storing your food and other supplies. I brought with me a small microwave and small fridge to make a nice kitchenette area. I was glad to have brought the microwave on the day it was too windy to light an outdoor fire or grill. It’s a short walk to the fishing dock, a bit farther to the other areas. Easy bike ride around the whole lake area since it’s a small lake. There is a huge fenced off leash dog area too. There is a very small gift shop but not much to buy there there is a Dollar General store just before the park entry. Not much else around, so bring all your supplies with you. If needed, the small town of Safford is about 10 minutes away.

This lake is horrible. First off, had to wait a month to get a space (12) for 2 nights. I picked #12 because the freakin map showed it next to the lake thinking we could keep our small 12" plastic boat tied up at our camp site for early fishing in the morning....WRONG. There may have been water near that space 10+ years ago, but not now as it was so overgrown that it looked as thick as an Alder patch in deep Alaska. Total joke. So we were limited to taking our boat to the ramp every time we wanted to fish...total pain. Now for the actual lake conditions. REALLY BAD. The cat tails have been let to absolutely take over the entire lake and the algae in the water was so bad you could not throw a line out without getting snagged EVERY time. I could not believe this "park" has let the lake get to this condition. My suggestion was to get the outdoor prison work crews (there are several near by) to tackle this lake as it is obvious our user fee's are going to pay the salaries of the people "working" there. Even the elderly volunteers did not know how deep the lake was nor where the deepest part of the lake was. They knew nothing. Needless to say, the fishing was horrible. Yes the lake water level was about 5' low, but that does not account for the lousy conditions of everything else. I only live 1 hour away and will NEVER go back there again. Real shame.

We've taken our kids to Roper lake MANY TIMES over the years. We absolutely love it. We've gone in the summer several times, but have found that going during our kids' fall break from school in October is the PERFECT time to go! The weather is perfect. It's not too hot at that point, so it makes it the most enjoyable time to go! We have made many sweet memories with our children over the years. And, we have reservations for this coming October, and my sweet baby grandson will be able to start the next generation of family fun!

What an amazing little park! Spots are big, everything is clean and the lake was glorious this time of year. The only thing we would have liked better would have been a little beach on each camping area. You could get to the water from where we stayed but it not the swimming area, we had to drive to it.

As State Parks go, this is one of the nicer, cleaner, quieter ones we've camped at. We enjoyed the views and the facilities. Clean, well kept, and friendly staff.

Spacious campground! Being in a home on wheels, it’s nice to keep the distance and still get camping/outdoors activities in! Area is well maintained and camp hosts are friendly. Restrooms are open but because of the COVID-19, they are asking only tent campers use the facilities, and day facilities/swimming area is closed. But I’ve walked the dogs on the trails and enjoyed some time on my SUP and hammock! Just call ahead if you have questions during this COVID crisis...Already planned my return trip next month!

We stayed in Hummingbird Cabin which is a few steps from the lake. Park staff were friendly and helpful. The grill is by a balcony overlooking the lake and was a great way to spend the evening. We had a visit from two raccoons who were interesting to watch. The next morning it was great to step out for breakfast and watch the birds over a very calm lake. We passed through the town on the way there and it seems a good place for supplies. Even though the town is close by the park does feel remote. Its a short walk to the sower/toilet block but as we repeatedly found in Arizona State Parks they were well maintained and very clean. If we stayed there again there is a road up the nearby mountain which may be worth a look for some elevated hiking.
