An early start we arrived at the park at 7 and after a quick briefing started tracking at 7.30 .. it’s a varied hike walking through grass lands and then into the secondary forest after an hour and half reaching the primary forest where we were lucky enough to see an elephant in the bamboo forest .. the trek now begins to become a little more demanding and 3 of the 5 guests including my wife decided to turn back but had had a great experience although they would have probably preferred the golden monkey trail if they were to do it again . The remaining hike is steep using permanent ladders to scale the volcano it took us 5 hours in total to reach the summit but the reward is great standing simultaneously in 3 different countries with 3 different time zones !! It’s a demanding physical climb for someone who doesn’t really hike mainly due to the altitude and steep ladder climbs .. but I would highly recommend it

Very nice hike, with vegetation changing as you climb. It’s not too difficult although it started raining on the way down and got very muddy. Beautiful views with mossy trees and fog. You walk straight from the park HQ, through fields and villages.
Only frustrating thing is that you don’t get to the top. It would be better to do it from Uganda as you can reach the 3 borders summit.

The hike in itself was good. It wasn't difficult. I would even dare to say that this is the easiest hike in the Volcanoes National Park. We were about 30 when we started and everyone made it to the top. But there are two things I didn't like. The hotel and a tour agency (I won't name) made me hire a 4x4 vehicle. But we don't need one! The hike starts right at the back of the Volcanoes National Park headquarters. It's just behind! Don't waste USD 80 like I did!
The second thing I didn't like is that from the Rwandan side we don't reach the top. We can only reach 3,457 m. It's one of the teeth of this volcano. The word "sabyinyo" actually means teeth. And not the highest one! It's a little bit frustrating. The only way to reach the very top is from the Ugandan side.
It took about three hours to summit, stopping many times to wait for the others. This volcano is very green. It's like a sea of greenness. The weather was good when we went up, but it started to rain upon going down. It took me two hours to go down. I didn't wait for all the others. It was muddy, but it's not as difficult as for the other volcanoes because the slope is more gentle. In other words, this volcano is easier, greener and cheaper than the other ones, Bisoke for example (since you don't need to hire a 4x4 vehicle). You have a stunning view of the mountain when you reach the highest point, but you feel slightly disappointed because it isn't the top.
