Heron and Cormorant Rookery

A short walk from the parking area of the museum you can see these giant nests perched up in the branches. Quite a sight.

There isn't a lot to say about the Heron and Cormorant Rookery except that it is something that you should check out if you're in Morro Bay. It doesn't take a lot of time, but if you like birds or bird-watching, you'll find this fascinating. You can see hundreds of herons, egrets, cormorants and other birds in their natural habitat. There are more nests than you can count.

It's easy to get to and a short walk. I'm not a big bird-watcher, but still found this highly worth the few minutes it takes.

Wow. This is a must see for any birding enthusiastic. Many egret, cormorants, herons all nesting high up in the trees. I would definitely recommend binoculars if you have them. We also spotted a couple of woodpeckers and a bee hive. We saw many young birds getting fed by their parents. Can't believe this is our tenth trip to Morro and we never stopped here before. Will definitely make this a must see each time we come through.

Between Bayshore Bluffs Park and the Museum of Natural History, the nature trail through the Eucalyptus trees is mighty imprressive. It puzzled us as to why the huge nests were located primarily in dead and dying trees, devoid of foliage. The info boards along the way answer this mystery.

When the nests are established, the trees are healthy but, over time, the bird's urine and feces poison the ground and the trees. These are migratory birds and huge ones at that. We assume it is a mammoth undertaking for the birds to set up a new nest (which makes the exposed nests a more experdient option).

The size of the birds will vary, according to the species. The feather litter we saw on the ground speaks volumes about the birds from which they came. Again, the info boards are so helpful to appreciate the variety. Also there are examples of their eggs which range in colors (like sky blue) and size.

For us, this is part of our favorite walk from the end of the Embarcadero, up through the various parks, along the water, and to the Natural History Museum gift shop.

Pretty amazing to see all the herons and comorants nesting in the trees. Also breathtaking to see the large white herons flying overhead. Only a short drive from the town of Morro Bay or a half hour walk.

The rookery has actually changed location from where it is listed now. The birds changed their location. However, where the rookery USED to be is excellent place to see birds fishing.

We saw pelicans and egrets as well as herons and cormorants. We went around 10 in the morning, and there was definitely a feeding frenzy going. I wouldn't think that going later than 10 would be a good idea.

Continue walking or driving to the Nature Center which has excellent displays. Good for families.

We were there in the morning with gray, foggy skies but were still able to see dozens of birds nest and several baby cormorants feeding. A very short hike and quick stop on our bird tour.

This sanctuary was right next to the Inn at Morro Bay where we stayed. At first we had no idea what this was, once discovering, I could hardly keep my eyes off of it. We are not bird watchers by any means but this was just so cool. Once you look up and really start looking, you see nest after nest perched at the top of the trees. I had never seen anything like it. I so kicked myself for not bringing my binoculars with me. Saw a deer in there wandering around also. The Inn is on one side, then the bay and a very pretty green golf course across the road that makes the whole area very peaceful, and serene. I totally recommend going by and taking a look, take your binoculars for a closer look. Pretty cool even if your not a bird watcher.

Two years ago at this same time there were no birds whatsoever. This time every tree, every nest had occupants- mainly Double Crested Cormorants, but also a pair of egrets, several pairs of Great Blue Herons.

How exciting. Cormorant, Great Heron, and Blue Heron rookeries all together. Most of the time when I see rookeries, I have a hard time getting a clear view for photography, but not as challenging here.
