Had a great hiking experience. Easy trails through the oasis and into the desert. It was a shame the small pond was closed due to staffing. Dont miss the fault line

I've been enjoying this preserve since 2006, visiting frequently when we are in the area. What was once a friendly and welcoming place for nice desert hikes has become an over-managed, full of "we don't really want you here" signs, fences, and closed areas.
Disclaimer: before continuing, this is still an OK place to take a walk, the scenery is still OK if you ignore all the signs and fences.
For years when I came here, the palm-built shack had volunteers daily, where you could stop in for some friendly information, get a map, leave a donation, see about what wildlife etc. was in the area and more. The last few years, the shack is always closed. Where there once were little signs identifying the desert plants along the main oasis trail, now it's full of signs saying "stay on the trail!!", "Keep out!!", "closed!!" and other such welcoming signs. What used to be the McCallum pond, a lovely little oasis pond, has now been renamed to the "Simone pond" (who is Simone and why?), and to add to it, you can't get there because they've spent their time surrounding it with fencing and barbed wire, along with signs that say it will be open to visitors "when possible". (Meaning of course that we, the unwashed public, are too uncaring and stupid to visit it by ourselves, we must have a volunteer to accompany us so we don't ruin everything.
And yes, they have a parking lot, except the gate is always closed, even when the signs say it's open, so you have to park out on the highway. If you do go through the pedestrian gate, you're admonished to get out by 5PM. Why? So the volunteers, or whoever's running the place now can wander around and enjoy their preserve without us bothering them?
Whoever's running this should take a lesson from the national parks...they're there for the people, not for the employees and others they decide to allow in. They've done a tremendous amount of work marking trails and putting up signs and fences, but they can't staff the visitor shack, or open the parking lot, or do much of anything anymore. They used to offer bird, wildlife, and plant walks guided by volunteers, now they're apparently too busy making signs and putting up fences and marking trails so you don't ever set foot off that trail because you'll destroy something. But of course they can set foot off the trails, because THEY know what they're doing.
What a shame, after all the work that was done to make it a nice place back in 2006-2015, the people in charge now seem to be saying "We're usually closed, but if you must come here, stay on the trail, don't touch anything, and get out by 5 so we can enjoy it without a bunch of people running around. And stay out on Monday or Tuesday also."
Really? Hiking trails that require a tour guide and only at bankers' hours?
So go there, take a nice walk, but sadly it's not a shadow of what it once was.

Absoluut het bezoek waard. Erg erg mooi om zo'n oase te zien en om hier een wandeling in de omgeving aan te koppelen

A beautiful example of the unique topography and natural resources in the area. Got there early so was able to enjoy a nice hike before the main crowds arrived. Access to the area is blocked off so parking is along the roads which is a bit dicey given the crowds.

We had been here several years ago so we were a little disappointed that the visitor's center was closed because we remembered that the lady had been very helpful with advice with what trails to take. We hiked back to the Simones Pond but the gate was closed, so we hiked up to the Vista with a beautiful view, and then hiked the Moon Country trail, which is pretty long, but we enjoyed. We also hiked the Willis Palms Trail, and it is so interesting to be hiking in the desert and then come upon the beautiful Oasis. We enjoyed all of the trails on a beautiful day and would recommend going to this place even when the visitor's center is closed.

We went for an easy hike on one of the trails at the Coachella valley preserve, from the visitor centre there. We had a good view from the viewpoint there.
This was a stress free way of getting a feel for the desert.

We visited the preserve and did the 2 mile hike on a weekday. It was relatively busy. The volunteers were incredibly smart and helpful. We enjoyed the odd nature of the hike: through a few palm oases and mostly exposed desert sun. It was unique and worth the drive!

Many trails to hike.. but the trail to visitor center was closed, for 2 days. I’m guessing Presidents Day holiday. We opted for a the Willis Palms trail about 1/2 mile to the East. It was marked and a fairly easy hike, approximately 2 miles round trip, to the fan palms, but not the loop. Not stroller or wheelchair accessible. Too sandy.

We hiked for about an hour. Took the McCollum trail out and 1000 palms trail back. These trails were flat and sandy. We walked the boardwalk through the large fan palm trees. They are really amazing. We parked on the side of the road and walked into the park. There are more trails to explore in this area and we will return.

The Preserve is a beautiful area . It is truly an oasis in the desert and unlike anything I have ever seen. We went on a Sunday morning and were lucky enough to talk with 3 different docents about the area, birds and other wildlife there. Happy to learn that snakes were still in hibernation! The hike is Easy which takes you through the Thousand Palms Oasis and out to McCallum Pond. Parking was along the road because the road into the parking lot for the Preserve was closed. We didn’t have to park too far away, but we were there early. The Preserve is closed on Monday and Tuesday so keep that in mind when making plans to visit. Highly recommend.

i walk with a cane. IS it possible to experience at least some of the area with limited mobility?
Are there climbs? Rough territory?

We loved our experience there even though we didn't walk far because the snakes were active at that time. I was wearing sandals!
Is there the possibility to store a hand luggage while visiting?

CVP is wilderness and the visitor center is rustic. I would not leave anything in view in the car in the parking lot. There is no storage for anything. Bring water.
how long a drive from Palm Springs?

Any suggestions on easy (1-4 miles) wildflower trails where we can see lots of wildflowers?

You can do the little loop at the Coachella valley preserve to the oasis and back , that is easy and you can still see the followers.
You can see the beautiful wild flowers at Joshua Tree park.
You can enter from the south side, they are beautiful and just stop your car.
You can also depending where you are the Borrego Spring park, there were beautiful flowers.

AAA recommended your location as a must see. Our grandchildren are small in strollers. Is the location stroller friendly by chance?

Coachella Preserve not good for strollers. When you enter the palm grove, there are steps of varying heights leading down to the boardwalk. Not at all conducive to strollers.
A better possibility would be Whitewater Preserve off the northern end of 111. There is a large pond with fish, picnic tables, restrooms and you could take a short walks with strollers.
A second possibility is the Big Morongo Preserve, about 20 minute drive up 62, watch for signs, right turn. If you stick to the Marsh Trail, it is all boardwalk, accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. A beautiful moist oasis in the desert.

My fiance and I are looking for a good place to take engagement pictures. Also - I looveee palm trees. How does Coachella Valley Preserve compare to Indian Canyons? Which one would be better for pictures?

I've never been to Indian Canyons. The Coachella Valley is beautiful, especially the water fall if it is still flowing this late in the season.

It is indicated by the fact that vegetation naturally occurs around the area of the fissure which allows water to rise... And its signposted! 😎
