The Cotopaxi volcano provides a stunning landscape.
If you don’t have a car it is easier to organise via an agency. The hotel called the agency for us and since we don’t stop for lunch we paid 90$ for 2 adults and 1 child (7 years old).
We first toured the laguna de Limpiopungo. A great stop. We toured the lake in about 45 minutes. It is easy and flat,
Then we went up to the car park at the bottom of Cotopaxi and we walked up to the refuge. Our son, who usually is a good hiker, did not manage to even start the walk due to the lack of oxygen. He clearly needs longer than 12 days to get acclimatised. He therefore stayed in the car with the guide and walked up and down to the refuge in 35 minutes, 1 hour with stops for photos.
After this our guide dropped us off a bit before the interpretation centre and we walked along the Páramo trail for 10 minutes. Then we visited the interpretation centre, which is great for kids but none of the electronics worked, which is a shame.
Overall it was a great day as the clouds cleared up and we got to see the volcano, which is absolutely majestic and beautiful.

We participated 1 day trip to volcano Cotopaxi with the perfect guide Irene. We were lucky to underwent our trip with her - she was so nice, very positive, helpful and well - organized. She explained us a lot of interestings things about Ecuador's nature, culture, food... The trip was well scheduled and figured out on time. I really recommend this perfect trip with kind Irene :) Thank a lot, Irene :)

Cotopaxi is an active volcano located in the province of Cotopaxi in Ecuador. It is like two hours in car from Quito. There you can hike the mountain and see the snow or many animals like foxes or llamas, but be careful fist of the cold weather, then of the slippery ground and finally of the pressure; the volcano is in a high level of the ocean so you might bring with you a good jacket, some candies for the sugar levels and water. Also you can camp in the national park so I recommend you to do it, it’s amazing to wake up seeing the Cotopaxi.

This is a definite "must see".
Magnificent experience. We were here for ok. clear weather, but it changes very quickly...
The road to the volcano is very rough, so it requires a 4 wheel drive car.
And it is certainly not for the walking impaired and people with breathing difficulties.
Great to try climbing a volcano. The way up is hard and the air is thin.
Unfortunately, we had to give up halfway to the camp.
It is highly recommended to have a guide with you.

Great volcano trek to 4865 m height. Friendly staff at the refuge / base camp. Nice to get a hot chocolate after the trek. Good beginners trek

Cotopaxi est un incontournable absolu lors d'un voyage en Équateur. J'ai eu la chance incroyable de visiter cette magnifique région et d'assister à des éruptions volcaniques spectaculaires. Cotopaxi est non seulement l'un des volcans les plus actifs de l'Équateur, mais aussi l'un des plus beaux.
Lors de ma visite, j'ai été émerveillé par la majesté imposante du volcan Cotopaxi. Sa silhouette élancée et sa cime enneigée créent un paysage à couper le souffle. Les paysages environnants sont tout aussi impressionnants, avec de vastes plaines verdoyantes et des lacs pittoresques.
Ce qui rend Cotopaxi encore plus spécial, c'est la possibilité d'observer des éruptions volcaniques.
Outre les éruptions volcaniques, Cotopaxi offre également de nombreuses activités pour les amateurs de plein air. Les randonnées à travers les sentiers bien entretenus permettent d'explorer les paysages volcaniques uniques et d'admirer la beauté naturelle de la région. To climb volcanos or access national parks in Ecuador, you must make a previous request to the environment ministry.
The access is free but at the entrance, if you are foreign they will try to force you to pay for a local guide (around 50USD).
Only 1.7km round trip to get to the shelter.
I didn't get to the summit but I willl next time. I totally recommend

Nous avons passé 3 nuits à l’hacienda El Rejo et avons pu découvrir la région
Une journée dans le parc Cotopaxi extraordinaire avec Patricio comme guide
L’organisation validée par l’hacienda était parfaite
Déplacement en 4X4 jusqu’à l’entrée du parc puis balade à cheval, équipé de poncho local, nous avons parcouru le parc jusqu’au pied du Cotopaxi
Cela reste une journée inoubliable
Une journée dans le parc Cotopaxi extraordinaire avec Patricio comme guide

The mountain has a permanent ice cap for the highest approximately 2 km except when there is a significant eruption. Count on snow in the upper reaches. Unless you are an experienced climber, you will not encounter the ice cap.

i am 60 years old and in average condition. i live in florida and i have no trouble walking 10 miles. can a person like me if acclimatized well make it to the summit of cotopaxi??

You will need to acclimate accordingly. I trained for 90 days to climb Cotopaxi and Chimborazo and I live at sea level too. You must be have incredible cardiovascular fitness. If you are just taking a bus up there and walking to the refugee you will be fine. If you’re actually making a summit bid, you need to train. Do you have any mountaineering Experience? Have you ever walked for more than six hours in 12 point crampons uphill with 1/2 the oxygen at sea level? If you want training a routine and more preparation info let me know. If you seriously want this summit; training, acclimating, and conditioning are definitely required.

Hello, I am travelling on my own and want to join a shared daytour to Cotopaxi on a monday in February. All tours I could find online take part on another days. I would arrive in Ecuador on sunday evening and want to leave Quito on tuesday. Can you recommend a company for shared tours that depart mondays? Thank you.

For those of you who have already been, roughly how cold does it get? girlfriend and I are in Ecuador and want to go Cotopaxi (not summit though, just around 5000m day trip) but don't have winter jackets with us, we have long sleeves, hoodies, light jackets, if we layer up and buy gloves/hats do you think this will suffice?? thanks for your help!

Sorry for the late response (I hope you did not go without proper gear). If you are willing to climb up to the second station (half-way). Just a medium-heavy jacket will do. If you want to make it to the top, you will have to suit up and gear up. It is clod and icy/snowy.

I am planning to take the bus from Quito to Latacunga and stop at Cotopaxi National Park. Are there always guides waiting with 4x4? and is it possible to leave some heavy bags in their cars while hicking up the volcano?

Yes, there are guides waiting 1 mile before the entrance, and I am pretty sure they can take your bag.
