There used to be a resturant across the street and on top of the hill. Was family oriented - home cooked style food with a gift shop. It is still there?

Yes. We did not eat there, but it is still there, as well as the gift shop.
How long of a walk is it from parking to village and the village itself end to end?

The village is right next to the parking lot. I don't know exactly how long the village itself is. You can stop at each house/building and read about what it was used for. We went off season, so none of the buildings were open except for the visitors center and a building making barrels. Mostly dirt roads. But the walk can be challenging if you go all the way down to the grist mill which is just a building but you have to go down many steps over a covered bridge and then down more stairs. (Which means you have to walk up all those stairs you came down.) if you take your time and enjoy it on a nice day, will definitely take maybe 1+ hours. Fun activity.
How much time would you need to visit?

A little late to the party with my answer, but as others have mentioned, it would be good to plan on a few hours. You can see it in less time, but there are a lot of cabins with information to read about each. I also agree with the other answers when they mentioned if they had "interpreters" available. Last time we were there, we probably spent 30 minutes or so just in the blacksmith's shop. We found it fascinating so if there are interpreters and you are really into Lincoln related history, you could end up spending much of the day there.
They also have a museum at the front of the village that has quite a bit of stuff related to Lincoln and New Salem as well. If you enjoy Lincoln history, you will end up spending quite a bit of time in the museum.
Something that the other answers I read did not mention is it depends on how many people you have with you. Our kids really enjoyed looking around the various cabins and to some degree, the gift shop at the back of the village. On our most recent visit, after we went through the village, we took the kids over to another area of the park and they played on the playground equipment for a while before our one-and-a-half drive home so if you have young kids, you might want to allow a little time for them to play before piling back in the car if you are going to be driving very long.
In a past visit a year or two ago, we also hiked one of the several trails around the park. I think we hiked one of the shorter trails, and we probably spent close to an hour on the trail. We have only hiked that one trail, so cannot speak to how long any of the other trails would take to hike.
Hope this helps
