Make it a destination stop. Clear out some time to take it all in. This is a lovely drive up on State Route 11. This museum has all the details of living and working in the Maine Woods out on display. This is a rare collection, in my opinion, after I've thought back over the others in Maine I have visited and revisited over the years. Give yourself a good 3 hours to dig around in all of the outbuildings and restorations and displays. Ask questions. Bring a picnic lunch; bring the kids. Look at all the tools and check out what it took to SUPPLY the men and animals and machines doing this work. This is Paul Bunyan's home. I have relatives who were 'river pigs' using Peaveys and caulked boots to free up the spring runoff log jams on our rivers, to get the logs to Bangor and other mill towns, but no 'loggers' working in the deep woods during the deep winter. This was HARD WORK.

A nice museum with a lot of tools and vehicles and boats. Yes, logging history certainly includes boats. Great annual bean hole bean event with music.

Take the time out for this one . Even so many Mainers have not been there. Insight into the wealth that made the area over 100 years ago. Changed so much since 86 (my last visit and new exhibits really take you there

This museum is a bit outdated but the film they show is both interesting and educational. The owner of a lumber company made a "moving picture" of the whole process of timbering back in the 1920's. So interesting! They also have several lumber camp buildings from different periods to look at. We felt we learned a lot about the old way of timbering and how life was in a lumber camp.

Begin your visit with a film that shows how logging was done, with brave, agile men scampering over floating logs, breaking up log jams so the timber could float down the river and eventually cut into boards, clapboard and other pieces and shipped to customers on ships. The museum has a main building with exhibits and restrooms, plus outbuildings like a sawmill, cook house and bunkhouse. You’ll see saws and axes, snowshoes and clothing used by the loggers, plus equipment. Men ate four meals a day and talking at the table was prohibited because the cooks didn’t want to hear complaints and had to prepare for the next meal. The museum should be fun for the whole family.

We saw one of the last log drives when we moved to Maine in the mid '70s and were interested to learn more about the timber business. Our tour of the exhibits was preceded by the video about logging in the 1930s, all with Tim Sample-narrated vintage footage. Fascinating - and prepared us well for the exhibits. The old logging house and kitchen was especially interesting. What a hard and dangerous life! Well worth seeing.

We stopped at the Lumberman's Museum on our way to visit the new Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. We found the staff at the museum very helpful and they allowed us to fill our water jug for our camping trip. The museum offers a fascinating look at the lumbering history of northern Maine. We especially enjoyed the recreated logging camp and the boomjumper boat. The museum also has a great video of one of the last logging drives on the Machias River. Well worth a visit to Patten.
