Very Informative

Such a unique place to visit to lean about sustainability and how this group is changing the way we think about architecture. The paid, self guided tour takes you through one Earthship, and outdoors of another (they are private residences), but there are videos that show the inside and the construction of others. The group has a 4-week long program where students get hands on training to learn how to build their own dwelling.

A Very Unique Experience

Not a very large center, but the young man in the Visitor Center was very informative and eager to answer any questions I had. The videos on the tour were informative, but the experience did not take a lot of time.

Learned so much

Learn how thru trail and error this community was started. Using materials like tires, tin cans and adobe able to create housing with little dependency on outside resources. Emily gave a great tour.

Odd collection of some of the oddest (and even strangest) homes you'll ever see. No space aliens visible when we visited, but they might have felt right at home.

Get a Private Tour It’s Worth It

Ever since our first private with Vanessa (the guide) Earthship Biotecture has become a regular stop in Taos when we have out of town guests that love nature. It is one of a kind, thought-provoking and extremely educational in a variety of ways. Vanessa kills it on tours with her depth of knowledge and straight answers.

Interesting concept

As we were driving from Taos New Mexico to Colorado, we passed these interesting-looking houses. It was 9 am and tours were not offered until 10. However, looking at some of the other reviews, that was perhaps just as well. We spent 10 minutes here and took some photos. These houses are low maintenance and have minimal environmental impact (being made of mostly recycled material and often partially underground) but are expensive to build. Interesting concept but not practical (or even desirable for most of us).

Interesting stop

Had driven through the valley and seen the homes few years ago, but stopped in center this time and an enjoyable stop. Is a large earth home being constructed across street so could see the construction process. Tours available we did not do - maybe next time in area.

$8 tour is a rip off. Only in the building you buy ticket in. Walk around the parking lot then and look at falling apart buildings and no trespassing and keep out signs.

Enjoyed the overview of Earthships

I found this very interesting... and we only have one earthship, the visitor center, to see during the week. Must come on a weekend to get a tour of other earthships and hopefully more info about them.

Sustainable living

First off, its a great idea, but one still has to have lots of money to sink in for this type of living. It kind of reminded me of the Hippy Dippy 1970's. Once you've completed your house, yes, low or no maintenance required. On retiring from a University and not a professor, I could never afford this type of housing. That is the one thing that seems to be omitted, the cost of building your house. Great idea and for those that can afford it, I hope it becomes something that is available to everyone.
