Part of American history

The cemetery is on the left side of the road if going north out of Williamsport. I drove right by it as I was looking at the business on the right directly across from it. There is an historical marker just beside the road. I did find it after turning around. Parking can be a challenge as the cemetery has no place to park. I parked along side the road. The grave sites are on a fairly steep hill side. There are steps coming from the road. I wouldn’t say it is handicapped accessible. I was there on Veterans Day and spoke with another gentleman who came dressed in period military dress to pay his respects. It’s humbling just to stand there and try to imagine what life was like for these people. And it’s sad that the city / county doesn’t do anything to promote this piece of historical ground. Kudos to whoever keeps the grounds looking nice and keeps nice looking flags on the gravesites. Glad I went.

Historic Cemetery

Was out here to take a peek as someone said it was not mowed. When I got there it was mowed but muddy at the entrance. It's on a hill so be warned you will be on an incline when coming down from the top of the hill. Very lovely place to be.

Mostly African American soldiers are buried here

This cemetery was donated for the burial of African American soldiers. It is maintained by a local resident and has a small plaque.

An underappreciated and very important historical gem!

We found out about this cemetery only because our friends' brother cleared the brush and weeds from it as part of his Eagle Scout project. As the historical marker says, the land belonged to Daniel Hughes, who helped fugitive slaves escape along the Underground Railroad. The occupants of nine graves have been identified as African-American civil war veterans, but others may belong to former slaves.

I rate this cemetery 5 stars not because if its appearance. It really looks like an old cemetery, but that is the point; a place this significant deserves better.
