We paid to do the Dig for a Day and what an interesting day it was! We began at the museum, traveled to the only confirmed feeding site in the world where we learned about this and see it. Then traveled to the actual "dig" where we were with paleontologists. They provided a bag lunch, then traveled to a place that had been underwater and looked for our own fossils. The day ended with a personal tour of the museum and going to the lab where we helped clean up dinosaur bones. The website says for ages 3 and up, but I would suggest ages 10 and up. You have to be very careful where you step and touch at the actual dig site. I feel like parents would spend their entire time monitoring their children if they were under age 10.

Excellent exhibits and explanatory text covering evolution of life on earth before and during the period of the dinosaurs. Visiting this museum was main purpose of our stay in Thermopolis, and we were very impressed with all we saw.

Lived up to expectations with loads of locally found dinosaur bones & fossils, not just replicas. Nicely set out with lots to see.

We did Dig for a Day ($150/person, advance reservations required). There was a paleontologist, an intern, and up to 10 people (though our group was smaller bc a family cancelled). You set out at 8.15 and by 8.30 you're on a dig site dusting and chipping away. They are good with the kids who were in rapt attention the entire time. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle, snacks, and maybe a pad. Lunch and kneeling pads are provided but you might want more. One of our group uncovered a significant bone which was documented. They've found and documented around 100 bones so far this season, roughly one a day.
By 12.30 we went to a site for finding plant fossils which had a million fossils but none was very interesting - would have preferred to stay longer digging dinosaurs. From 1.30-2.30 we went to a site for finding various sea creature fossils which was interesting but still not as cool as dinosaurs.
From 3-4 we visited the lab and used some of the tools to clean bones, and the tour leaders gave a tour of the exhibitions. The museum has some very important specimens but they're not the largest, and it might not even be obvious why they're important. The kids stayed entertained through the tour which is an accomplishment.
Afterwards the nearby hot springs feel pretty good.
I wouldn't make much of a detour for the museum itself, but the Dig for a Day is worth a special trip.

Huge shoutout to the interns at the Wyoming Dinosaur Museum. They were so patient and immersive with my four year old, Noah. It was like he was one of them. Although it was HOT, it was an amazing experience and recommend anyone with Dino obsessed kids. They make it well worth the money. Thanks again!

I just wanted to say that we went to the dinosaur museum and it was amazing. We did the all day dig with my five grandchildren, Will and Tom were our guides they were amazing very patient kind soft-spoken just wonderful with the children. They were so encouraging with the kids and it was very hot, but they just kept telling what a great job they were doing. We were in the shade while doing the dig. We would definitely do it again!
Worth every penny! I have a suggestion for the museum stock closed toed shoes.

Before ending our stay in Thermopolis, we stopped by the Wyoming Dinosaur Center and toured the museum. We wished we had time for a dig. The center is one of the top ten dinosaur museums in the world. It started in 1993 when dinosaur bones were discovered on nearby mountainsides.
The museum contains exhibits illustrating the history of life via fossils, starting with single-celled protozoas through the age of dinosaurs. The Hall of Dinosaurs includes some of the largest dinosaurs (with very long tails!) ever mounted. The gift shop is also worth a visit.

Took my son who is 16 here from the UK as he is wanting a career in palaeontology so he did the Dino Academy, fantastic experience for him, he had a wonderful few days learning with hands on experience. It’s a must do trip. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We will be back!

We drove almost two hours for the museum and dig site. We show up almost a hour early and they tell us they’re sold out for the dig for the day. Nowhere on their site does it say they can sell out. Wasn’t worth the two hour drive to visit a very tiny museum.

Hello,
thinking about doing a trip to the Dinosaur Center in the summer. Will be traveling with an 8-year old and a 6.5 year old, who is taller (and, arguably - but I'm biased) more mature than many 7-year olds. I am trying to work out whether both might be allowed to join in the kids dig (it states that 7 is minimum). We can hardly only let the older one join in - we might have to skip this to keep the peace in the family...
Thanks
Anton

I am doing an essay on the wyoming dinosaur center and i have some questions, first off when was the dino center founded and who founded it? Second off could you give me some info on jimbo and like where you found him and how many people on average come to see him?

The Wyoming Dinosaur Center was founded in 1993 by Dr. Burkhard Pohl. It officially opened July 1, 1995. The Supersaurus "Jimbo" was found in Douglas, Wyoming and is still being excavated today. We get an average of 40,000 visitors per year.

Thank you for the question, Gemma C!
We are still in the master planning phases for our new facility. A building project of this scale and ambition requires a lot of intense planning. We hope to begin construction in the next few years.
Studying dinosaurs requires lots of time, passion, and patience. It can take us years to uncover a single dinosaur skeleton (we've been digging up our Supersaurus for fifteen years!) But passion and patience eventually yield amazing things. You can see many of our amazing accomplishments in our current exhibits, programs, and scientific research. Our entire team is excited to bring our passion and vision of the prehistoric past to our new facility.
If you would like more news about our museum, including updates on the new facility, I encourage you to follow us on our Facebook page - Just look for the Wyoming Dinosaur Center!
Thank you for your interest!

How long does the dig site tour last?
Is it more child oriented, or ok for adults without kids?

Hello, Allison!
Our dig sites tours last about an hour and a half, including twenty minutes for travel to and from the sites. You will get a brief overview of the history and prehistory of the area, learn about the digging process, and visit at least two active dinosaur dig sites. Our tour is designed so everyone can learn and enjoy the science of paleontology. This is a great experience for all ages - you have our guarantee.
Thank you for your question, and we hope you'll take a prehistoric journey with us this summer!

Thank you for your question!
The dinosaur bones we find at the sites are kept in the museum collections for display and research. But if you happen to find a bone during a dig, your name will be included in the field books and all future scientific work involving that bone.

We parked two airstreams and tow vehicles head to toe and had no issue.

How long does it typically take to tour the museum? All day - or a few hours - or something else?
投稿日:2016年10月5日
The museum itself can be from 1 hour or less. But it is interesting enough that one can linger far longer watching the lab work in specimens. If you elect to go out to the actual dinosaur site (I really liked it!). Allocate another 2 - 3 hours
