The previous reviews are very informative and provide comprehensive information about this hike. Additionally, I would advise organizing the day so that you climb up at the end of the day when it's not as hot, but still reach the parking lot before dark. The way uphill for a young, well-fitted person will take approximately an hour. For others, it may take up to two hours.

Trip advisor has the wrong spot noted on ita map. The trail is much closer to the intersection.I found this trail to be difficult but enjoyable. The trail is 2 miles one way. The parking area can get very full. It is on the side of the road. Be careful parking, part of the parking area is eroded and our car bottomed out pretty good. The hike is straight down with loose gravel as a serious factor. So the appropriate shoes are important. Make sure they have good traction. One of the people with us slipped and fell. Fortunately, they were not hurt. There are a series of numbers, and once you get to 8, you have arrived at a small beach with a concrete marker in the water, marking the spot where the caption cook was killed. We snorkelers from this beach and found it a little challenging to get in because the rocks are slick. However, once in the water, you will enjoy the snorkeling. The water is very clear and there are a lot of interesting things to see. If you snorkel to the left of this beach, you will see the obelisk monument. It can also be reached by trail from the beach. The walk back up was hot as hell and harder than I thought it would be. We just made our way up very slowly, stopping in the shade. My recommendations are the following: go early, we arrived at 7am and were the first people to get there. Bring lots of water. You get dehydrated from the snorkeling and will also need it for the return hike. Bring a snack. We did not, and this decision negatively impacted my energy level when we were hiking up. As the day goes on, it will get more and more crowded. On our hike, we saw goats and pigs.
There is no bathroom.

This is a great hike to a spectacular snorkeling spot!

The hike is just under 4 miles round trip, with 1300 feet of elevation loss from the trailhead to the bay. The first half of the trail is through tall grass. We encountered several volunteers who were trimming back the brush...thank you! The second half of the trail crosses an old lava flow and is more open with little shade. Overall, the trail is easy to follow and well built, though there are a few rocky sections. Based on previous reviews, we expected a much more difficult hike. It was hot coming back up but as long as you are prepared with plenty of water (we had 2 liters per person, and used nearly all of it) and snacks, this trail shouldn't pose any issues for those used to hiking. Parking is limited at the trailhead, so arrive early if you want a guaranteed spot. We arrived at 7 am and there were already several other cars present.

Snorkeling at the bay was fantastic. So much coral, lots of fish, and we also saw two octopi! Gets busy once tour boats arrive around 9, so we were glad we got there early and had the place (mostly) to ourselves for a little bit.

This is not an easy trail to walk on, good footwear is highly recommended. The hard part of this trail is coming back in the sun, heat and going uphill, be prepared and have lots of water. The snorkling is amazing & I would recommend getting there early before all the tour boats arrive, 8 am.. Milou

It is ranked as a hard trail, which I don't think so. You do need a pair of sneaker to complete the trail. You first hike 2 miles, and you will see a beautiful coastal line, then you will reach a monument, you can snorkel there, and there are TONs of fish there. I love this site, because when you go little bit into the ocean, you see a giant dip of the depth. You see all kinds of big fishes and the water changes color from light blue to deep deep blue.

We hiked with our grandkids (6 to 10) and their parents. Descending was difficult in parts due to the rocky nature of the trail, not for anyone but me (late 60s and need to work on my core strength). The ascent is hard, but I took my time, and got there in the end, while the rest of my group hopped up like mountain goats. As all the others who post on this trail stress, you must have adequate water, and must rest when you need to (if you need to!)

From the heights we could see pods of dolphins quite easily, but sadly the whales have mostly moved on. We didn’t see any wild pigs, but their rooting had dug up large sections of the trail in the tree covered areas. Lots of goats and their kids kept the grandkids enthralled. And there were chooks (Kiwi for chickens) especially in the morning.

Some of our party snorkeled. We were grateful for the unofficial guardians from the kayaking companies, who advised on the safe way to enter and exit the water, as well as how to best protect the coral. The whole area used to be home to > 6,000 persons, so it is important to respect the land and tread gently. I hope that in the future the site can be restored to highlight the long Polynesian history in this area.

We showed up just after 8am, and was about the fifth car at the top so had no problem. The hike down was amazing - most of it was shaded at that hour. When we got to the water there was one kayak company there and just a few other people. The water was the most clear snorkeling we experienced on the island. The ladders to get in and out at the monument seemed to be owned by the kayak companies so there might not be one there if you go too early. They told me not to walk up on the rocks due to urchins so I used their ladder. It was lovely! My daughter wished there was a patch of sand as she didn't like sitting on the lava rocks for a break. Protect your picnics - there was a mongoose stealing sandwiches and granola bars! Also, by the time I got out of the water for a break (maybe 9:45ish) there were tons of kayaks and tour boats there! It all happened while I was obliviously snorkeling! But it didn't bother us too much. I recommend going as early as you reasonably can though.

Now for the HIKE UP... The bottom part was OK and there were small trees planted in intervals for shade breaks going up (later may cast the shade off the trail - it was only around noon); however as a family who doesn't drink much water while hiking, we could have used a lot more of it! My husband wasn't hydrated before the hike and seemed to suffer some heat exhaustion. My daughter and I were pretty OK although hot. However, if you have any problems with hiking inclines (like exercise asthma) then you might have breathing issues hiking two miles up hill. I had a very tough time of it, and completely overdid it! It was the hardest hike I've done. The incline isn't super steep - I just can't hike that long up hill in the heat. I'm so glad we did it - my teenage daughter could have ran it, as others were doing. But my middle aged husband and I had a tough time!

The hike itself isn’t that bad. But due to the scalding sun and pungent humidity the way back up was the worst thing i’ve done in my life. Ran out of water and I thought i was going to die. At one point I stopped and thought maybe i will stay here until the helicopters can come and save me. I finished and will never do it again. If i wanted to punish someone I will make them do this hike. Be warned. The views were dank at the bottom though very beautiful.

It is not easy getting down this 3.8 mile hike with 1400 ft in elevation change due to tough footing. But it is very challenging getting back up. Definitely do it before dark. There is no water on the route either. Swimming at the end is wonderful.

If you are in very good shape with very good shoes, water, sunscreen and a great hat it is worth it walking beside lava flows and ending up at the marker where captain cook was killed.

Just off the intersection of 11 and the mamalahoa highway on the south side, leading into cook point in kealakekya bay. Park on the road and just down the road about 50 yards you see the sign warning you.
