We are considering a trip next year to Acadia for fall break, Oct 16-23. Is the weather still good for hiking at this point? And how early should we plan to make reservations? Thank you for any tips!
Yes! Acadia is beautiful in October. We just visited this year between Oct. 24-27th. It was a bit chilly but still good for hiking. If you are going to be visiting the Cadillac Mountain summit I would suggest bringing a heavier coat/gloves. We went during a time when reservations for the mountain were not in effect yet so I'm not sure about how early to book.
Hi. Leaving tomorrow for Acadia - 5th time and can't wait. It's been a few years so... does my valid America the Beautiful Pass gain me entrance or do I have to purchase the vehicle pass as well? TIA!
Hello, I bought the vehicle pass, I don’t know if will valid. Ask and let me know to learn 👍
I will be in Bar Harbor the last week of August. Any recommendations for moderate hikes in the NP? 3-5 miles. Also - suggestions for dining in COVID responsible establishments? TYIA
Hikes in Acadia vary in terms of length and difficulty. It is very beautiful and the park rangers can offer advice depending on what you are looking for. We ate in a restaurant only once - Royal Indian. Food was superb and you can eat outside or in with tables spaced well apart. And the Portland Museum of Art is FANTASTIC if you enjoy fine art. Hope that helps!
How the hiking like in early October?
Before you plan your hike make sure you. An even get a reservation to enter the park. Vehicle Reservations Required October 1 to 18, 2020 Driving your vehicle to two of the most popular destinations in Acadia National Park now requires a reservation. The National Park Service is piloting the vehicle reservation system in October to prepare for a full season of operation in 2021. Where and when are vehicle reservations required? Cadillac Summit Road (4:30 am to 6:30 pm) and Sand Beach Entrance (7 am to 5 pm) sections of the Park Loop Road providing access to Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Ocean Path, the Beehive, Great Head, and Gorham Mountain. Vehicle reservations are not required for other areas of the park Vehicle reservations are not required to enter by foot or bike. How do I make a vehicle reservation? Reservations must be purchased in advance online at Recreation.gov for $2.00 each. Reservation fee is non-refundable for any reason, including fog, cloudiness, and other weather. Reservations are not be sold at the park. Is there a time limit on a vehicle reservation? No. Reservations provide a timed entry, but do not require a departure time. If you leave the area with your vehicle, you need another reservation to re-enter. Why are vehicle reservations required? Acadia is among the top ten most popular national parks in the United States, with more than 3.5 million visits a year. Visitation has surged almost 60 percent in a decade, leading to severe crowding at most park destinations. The National Park Service has prepared a Transportation Plan to reduce severe traffic and parking congestion so visitors can plan ahead and have a more enjoyable visit. The purpose of the plan is to manage access for vehicles, not people. Good to Know Vehicle reservations do not assign a specific parking space, but they ensure the availability of parking and reduce competition for parking in the reservation area. To allow for short-term trip planning, additional vehicle reservations will be made available two days in advance starting at 10 am ET on a rolling daily basis. You must have a valid park entrance pass in addition to your vehicle reservation. The vehicle reservation fee is not discounted for annual and lifetime pass holders. You may stay in a vehicle reservation area if you arrive before the start of the reservation time. Commercial tour operators with a valid Commercial Use Authorization do not require a vehicle reservation, but anyone travelling with them in a separate vehicle requires a reservation. Special Use Permits issued before the vehicle reservation pilot dates were announced will be honored. Special Use Permit holders do not require a vehicle reservation, but anyone travelling with them in a separate vehicle requires a reservation. Accredited school groups with an authorized entrance fee waiver do not require a vehicle reservation. The Island Explorer bus system is not operating due to COVID-19.
Wanted to know if it make sense to hike in Acadia at the first week of April. I don't mind the cold, just afraid the park would have limited access due to previous snow.
We went in beginning of June and it was great! Also missed some of the crowds!
My husband and I are planning a week in Downeast Acadia, Acadia Nat'l Park area from mid to late September, 2019. Would love some advice on places to stay that would be a great location for travel from Stonington to Campobello Island. We want to travel the Nat'l Park as well as explore coastal towns. thanks for any suggestions this is our first trip to Maine!
We did a road trip last August to Acadia NP and we stayed in Bar Harbor. It is a closest town Acadia I believe. I have to book hotel a year in advance because August is a popular month. You may have more luck in late Sept. We stayed at Bar Harbor Inn. The location is perfect.
Are there picnic table inside the park
From my Google search, it looks like there are five official picnic areas in different parts of the park: Thompson Island, Bear Brook, Fabbri, Seawall, and Pretty Marsh. If eating a picnic meal at some point is something you really want to experience, you should probably plan your hiking or driving ahead of time so you end up at one of the picnic areas -- they're spread out, and especially if you're hiking, you shouldn't expect the nearest one will be a 10-minute walk from wherever you happen to be once you get hungry.
