If coming with a bus of retirees, is this worth a "side trip"? What days and hours is it open? Would they open for a group, even if not on the schedule?

YEs, it is worth the side trip. There are three main areas to visit. The welcome center has a very nice movie about 15 minutes long about his life. The next stop is about 1/4 mile away, but they have trams going to it frequently that fit 16 at a time. They can bring extra trams. The museum is great! They will all get a kick out of his famous car in the basement, and all the changes he made in their lives. The museum is broken up into stages, to remember each period as you pass through that section. The museum was done well.
The house can be missed. The tram will drive them to the entrance, but it is cramped and it is not great. The rooms are blocked off, so you have to peak in from the doorway of each room. They let 30 people in at a time, so 30 people try to pack 1 doorway at a time. I didn't think the house was so great, but the garden is beautiful. The last place to see is the stables. They will enjoy that. There are carriages and harness from that period, with all the ribbons and pomp and circumstance. There are buttons on the wall that has his voice talking about his stables. Really sharp.
I do not think they will keep it open for the group any longer than the posted hours. It is a national park, and regulated as such. Also, the weekends get VERY crowded in the summer, so if you can make it on a week day, that would be better. But they have made the exhibits completely wheelchair accessible, and easy to get around for the disabled. Very nice overall.
