I've taken many friends on this historic house tour over the years. The house has grown with more to see. The kitchen is a unique feature that other historic houses don't have and the gardens are beautiful. However, I feel a tour is only as good as the guide. On Monday May 30th at the 12:45 tour, the man who was our guide seemed more to lecture with undertones of his adgenda. Yes, we have all been to school and understand that salvery was a dark spot in our history. This was advertised as a historic house tour and unfortunately, I don't think the guide fulfilled that criteria.

I was lucky to join a tour of just four adults, with Jovi, today. He was an excellent guide and brought the house and its history alive. As a non-US citizen, I learnt much of Savannah’s and the USA’s early 1800s history, through the story of the house and its inhabitants. I was surprised to learn that a house this old had indoor plumbing. The furnishings are not original but are of the period and invoke a sense of how it was 200 years ago. Thank you to Jovi for the excellent tour. And thank you to the owner who deeded the house to the public of the future.

Harris was an incredible guide. he was made for the job with his delivery, tone, and wealth of knowledge. Their architecture and history of this dwelling are fantastic. The tour provides a look from the perspective of all those who came through those doors. It is the most well preserved location of the time still in existence.

This was my second time going through this beautiful house and my husband's first. My first was after Covid so only self guided but this time we had a guide. I wish I remembered his name, young man and really embraced the history of the house. I love how the focus was on enslaved help. Quite honestly I wasn't interested so much in the house as I was about the life of a slave. This tour focuses on the black history and does an excellent job. Slavery is a huge part of our southern history and the painful stories need to be taught and heard. These were some of the most remarkable people and while they were silenced in their time their stories now go on forever. I plan to bring my grandchildren to visit for this history lesson.

I really enjoy historical tours, and this was on our list when visiting Savannah. The tour started with a very informative timeline of the colonization of Savannah and history of the home ownership, then a viewing of the slave quarters. Unfortunately, the slave quarters were quite modernized, as was the courtyard. The tour guide was very thorough and provided a lot of insight in the contributions the slaves provided in the construction and upkeep of the property. However, I did not need the constant reminder of how slavery is wrong (of COURSE IT IS!!), and this was shoved down our throats throughout the tour. I honestly felt like I was being treated like a child. It’s unfortunate, because I would have given this 4 stars.

I had a very unpleasant experience at the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters tour. I didn't realize there were stairs (steep stairs) on the tour and after a long day of sightseeing in Savannah I decided I didn't want to climb the stairs when the tour began and stayed on the first floor. The tour guide came down and asked why I had not gone upstairs to see the slave quarters. I let him know that i have trouble climbing stairs. He said that the other part of the tour had stairs as well. He looked angry and I thought it was because I didn't participate in the tour so I told him I would try to climb the stairs but I would have to go slowly. He said he didn't want me on his tour because I had offended him. He was raising his voice in front of the rest of the group that was on the tour. I told him that he had misunderstood why I didn't climb the stairs but he stormed off mumbling that he was pissed off. I was so embarrassed and upset that I just sat down and waited for my family to finish the tour. He ruined my day but I decided he would not ruin my whole trip. Savannah is a great city with a lot of nice people in it but Dook, the tour guide, was not one of them.

Guides do a very good job of describing what life was like during the time the Owens Family lived here. They work hard to bring alive the lives of the slaves as well as the enslavers.

Dook served as the tour guide. During the tour, there was a lady who struggled to ascend the stairs, so she opted to sit at the bottom on a bench. At the conclusion of the tour upstairs, Dook approached her and scolded her in front of everyone, expressing offense that she hadn't taken the stairs. She explained that she hadn't realized she wouldn't be able to manage the steep stairs and didn't want to hold anyone back. Nevertheless, Dook informed her that she was no longer welcome on his tour. His behavior was highly unprofessional and unwarranted. The young lady sat outside, visibly upset and in tears, while her family completed the tour. Witnessing the situation left me too distraught to focus on the tour.

This was a really interesting tour which gave new insights into the lives of the enslaved. The rooms are all decorated from the period and the slaves quarters are shown. There are some excerpts from family letters on display which give a glimpse of the unfair slavery attitudes of the owners.

I expected a historical tour full of good information of this home and the area. We did not receive that. Our tour guide, who seemed bored with the whole presentation, shared very little about the families who had lived there, the town’s history, or the architecture and artifacts and paintings in the home. Instead, the main focus is on the life of the slaves in that home and then not even personal in that. I understand that is a part of the story; however, it felt very unbalanced. Even the literature tried to influence negative feelings and emotion with words and phrases, such as ‘seeming affection’ from the owners and assuming that all children raised with nannies felt a greater sense of power over them. We left feeling greatly disappointed. What a poor history lesson. I do not recommend this home at all. Most of us would appreciate an unbiased and balanced historical presentation.
