Not only is Lake Lawn a beautiful, serene, and beautifully maintained funeral home and cemetery, but the staff are top notch on every level. When my father recently passed away, his services were provided by Lake Lawn, and our family could not have been happier with the service, personal assistance, kindness, compassion, and assistance given to us during this very difficult time. We went with a tour guide and had a wonderful experience learning about the history and the various types of resting places. I would not go on my own simply because I did not know who/where well known people were resting. Be mindful to stay hydrated and prepared for the sun. The history of this cemetary and the beauty was incredible.

This place is huge and placed in the perfect secluded spot to peacefully be its own thing. Definitely impressive, grand, and beautiful~

This is where the very rich are laid to rest and it shows. The grounds are very beautiful, even in November was still able to spot a few squirrels. I went there to pay my respects to Anne Rice, and after a few wrong turns I was able to do so, once I let the cars pass the road in front of me, (cars really do ruin the peace and tranquility, haven't people ever heard of parking their cars and walking?!) The Cemetery is set out beautifully and if you do happen to catch the streetcar from Canal Street, you also pass Greenwood Cemetery getting here, if that is of interest) For fans of Anne Rice, just like seeing her old homes, this is also worth a visit when you come to New Orleans.

A truly awe-inspiring place. Maybe the most beautiful cemetery in the City of the Dead. We drove around in comfort and at our leisure so we could inspect the tombs as we wished. Absolutely breathtaking. Truly a unique spot to visit.

I know you’re thinking, visiting a cemetery but the history and the thought of family history is beautiful. Interesting reading about how they worded the headstones unlike today. Take a walk I think you’d find it very gratifying.

Metairie / Lake Lawn cemetery is very big and can get confusing with how sections are labeled. If you are going in to this cemetery on your own to explore, I highly suggest a map. If you are only looking for specific tombs, look up where they are located beforehand!

Lake lawn is another massive cemetery in the same district as the cemeteries seem to be. It’s huge and seems like all above ground burials.

We purchased tickets on Viator for a tour at Lake Lawn (Old Metairie) Cemetary. Don't miss out on this New Orleans Cemetary that boasts of the famous weeping angel! The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. It's a must see if you're in the area!

Does the cemetary ever open the doors for the Weeping Angel to be on display? If so, what time and when?
We are here through March and I'd love to get a better view of it, unless you just have to get lucky when there isnt steam on the windows....

No but about a mile away, in New Orleans City Park, there are hundreds of old, large, moss draped oaks!

We visited this cemetery today but weren't sure where to go to get the maps and CD. We parked next to the main building at the main entrance but saw there was a funeral going on inside. Surely this isn't the same place to get the maps? Is there an office somewhere?

I didn't have a map or a CD but used my iphone and had a DK Eyewitness guide book, so I sort of knew what I wanted to see. I also did a lot of aimless wandering.

I've always just roamed around without any guidance. However, I did a Google search and there's tons of info about the cemeteries of NOLA. Do a Google search for "self-guided tours of Metairie cemeneries."

If you go to the office of the funeral home on site they will give you a map and a cd to guide you around the cemetery. They take your license as a deposit on the cd and you have to go during normal business hours.

We had a car and drove there. Actually found it accidently on the way to Art Museum and city park .. there were 5 cemeteries on that road. But Metairie was the largest and best of the 5 by far. The weeping lady statue was hard to find .. it was along the edge with lots of Greece looking columns and its with in sight of the huge civil way statue on the horse. It's in the crypt and hard to see .. theres a tiny piece of broken glass on the side and luckily my camera had a tilt screen. some times the statue looks white other times blue depending on the time of day and reflections from the blue stained glass.
hope it helps. We felt safe to walk around here ... the Roche cemeteries .. felt unsafe.

You don't need to park anywhere. You drive around the cemetery and pull over at spots you are interested in getting out and looking at. This is an active, normal cemetery so you behave in the same way you would any cemetery, driving to a spot and pulling off to the side and getting back in once done or walking to other sites. It's not crowded so there is no issue parking by one grave and walking around and leaving your car.
