One of the guides on the trail up Santa Ana Volcano suggested that hiking Izalco Volcano is about the same distance as Santa Ana, but double the exertion. He was right!
I joined a guided hike that started from the Cerro Verde parking lot at 11 AM. Our large group on this Sunday morning descended through a beautiful wooded switchback trail to the saddle that separates Cerro Verde from Izalco Volcano. From here it’s a 45° rise, which is hiked on a rough and rocky switchback trail. There are plenty of solid handholds if you need to pull yourself up in places.
It was amazing to see the steam vents seeping out of the rock as we neared the small crater rim. Izalco has retained its iconic cone shape, so it’s not very wide at the top or as interesting as the sweeping view inside the magnificent Santa Ana Volcano nearby. I was rewarded by the expansive views all the way into Guatemala to the north, Lago de Coatepeque to the east, San Salvador to the south, and the great blue sea of the Pacific to the west.
Enjoy a frozen ice cream novelty at the crater rim when you get there. Only $1.5 for a popsicle—wow!
This is an out and back trail, and we retraced our footsteps to the car park the way we came. Going down the volcano was easy, but the return up Cerro Verde was a tough slog because of the grade and distance. The saving grace is that this section is entirely in the shade.
Prices: I was charged $4 for park admission (including parking fee), plus $3 for the guide.
Hiking time: Guides suggest four hours. Took me three hours, because the guides eventually allow us to hike the last strenuous section at our own pace.

Fue una aventura inexplicable, el estar entre la naturaleza y admirar lo bello que es nuestro país El Salvador, es una satisfacción tan grande el llegar hasta la cima y disfrutar la gran vista, a pesar de las piedras o lo difícil que sea el estar en medio de la caminata el muy satisfactorio llegar a la meta, además contar con gran guías que lo hacen sentir a uno cómodo. Fue una gran experiencia y un gran recuerdo de por vida.

Didn’t hike this volcano when visiting Cerro Verde National Park but did hike up Volcan Santa Ana and along the way had some incredible views of Izalco. My guide told me it’s a more difficult and steeper hike.

Definitely It is a nice experience for those of who have not had a close view of a volcano. Nice ride, excellent environment and wonderful view of the Izalco and Santa Ana Volcano

As globetrotters who intend to be the planet’s first family to travel to all 196 countries, Volcán de Izalco, near Santa Ana, El Salvador, was a must-see. This is because in this nation, this stratovolcano is an iconic one, even featured on Salvadoran currency. Wikipedia tells me that the volcano erupted continuously from 1770 to 1958. However, even though there weren't any more eruptions since 1966, I did discover fumes and smoke bellowing out from several places. Unfortunately, we became ill right before our journey to the top, which by any means, is extremely strenuous. So we flew our drone instead, and thankfully, we were able to capture all that without laying a foot on the volcano itself. Thanks, DJI! It's truly a globetrotter's dream come true!

Nosotros lo admiramos desde el Volcán Santa Ana desde donde se aprecia una linda perspectiva ya que lo tienes a un lado durante gran parte del recorrido.
Nuestro guía nos explico que pese a tener menor altitud (1950 msnm) requiere de mayor demanda física subirlo debido a la piedra suelta y tener mayor inclinación.

El ascenso dura aproximadamente 2 horas se necesita bastante resistencia física, el volcan es de mucho cuidado, ya que existe demasiada piedra suelta.
La entrada cuesta 1.50 para nacionales y 4 dls extranjeros, más 1 dólar guía turístico.
Son 1532 gradas para el. Ascenso más 1 hora desde la falda del volcan.

Muchísima aventura subiendo un típico volcán cónico. Necesitarás una buena condición física, zapatos cómodos y fuertes, de preferencia jeans cómodos, gorra, sueter liviano para no quemarte con el sol, Muuuucha agua. Y los Sentidos a mil!!!
